2015 Scouting for Food (Collection)

Scouting for Food

We will meet at 10:00 AM tomorrow morning for the second part of our Scouting for Food initiative.  This is one of the largest food drives in the nation and helps feed many people.  This is also the most important day of this initiative and we can use all the help we can get from our scouts. Feel free to bring friends and family to assist.

We will meet in the gym to break into groups.  Each group will require someone with a truck to follow them in order to collect the bags of canned goods.  As the vehicles fill we will unload at the gym to count the items and load them onto the trailer.  Once we have canvassed our area, we will take all goods to the foodbank at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church which is just up the street.

Please make sure to dress warm, dress in layers as it will be cold. Also bring you hat and gloves. We will be outside a majority of the morning. Don’t forget a water bottle to stay hydrated !!

2015 Scouting for Food Round 1

Scouting for Food

This Saturday, Nov 14th, we will be meeting at the Gym at 10:00am to begin our annual Scouting for Food Drive.

Scouting For Food is one of nation’s largest food drives that Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture Crew members participate in to support their local Food Pantries and Hunger Relief agencies. The Scouts of the Cradle of Liberty Council have continuously exceeded expectations and fully stocked dozens of our partner agencies with bags and bags of canned food.

Everyone will be divided into groups with multiple adults per group and we will go out and place bags on all doors within our given area.

The time accumulated this weekend and next will count as community service for the scouts and maximum participation may help us qualify for the Messengers of Peace award.

NOTE:  IT WILL BE CHILLY – PLEASE DRESS WARMLY AND IN LAYERS IN CASE IT HAPPENS TO WARM UP – BE SURE TO BRING HATS & GLOVES!!!

2015 Philadelphia Encampment Wrap Up

2015 Philadelphia Encampment PatchIt was a great weekend at the Philadelphia Encampment.  Thank you to everyone who came out and we hope you all had a great time on Saturday.  There were many really fun things to do such as Archery, BBs, Knot Tying, Pioneering, Cooking, STEM as well as several other non specific areas that were not only exciting but may have touched on other requirements if you visited those areas. (Please see important note below, about requirements).

This year’s encampment had a Civil War camp set up, a Philadelphia Scouting history tent that showed the history of Philadelphia Council, Treasure Island, and the Order of the Arrow.  We had the emergency helicopter from St. Christopher’s land on the field for the scouts to see, The fire department came out with an engine for the scouts to check out, the police department brought in a swat vehicle, highway patrol, mounted police and bicycle police.  The 24th district was even so kind to offer a special gun safety course which we also used to cover range safety and range rules before the scouts were allowed to use the BB rifles. Cub Scout visitors also got to spectate various Troop/Crew competitions such as the pie eating contest, bike relay, and more.

Finally, the scouts had a chance to see how the things they do in Cub Scouts will be built upon in the Boy Scouts. For example, after knot tying they were able to go to Pioneering and get a taste using those knots along with lashings to build some really amazing structures and got to traverse the monkey bridge, ride the the ferris wheel, and make their way through an obstacle course; all of which were built right there, on site, the night before.

As a bonus, the cubs who spent the weekend even earned a “frost point”, in Scoutbook, an unofficial count of nights spent tent camping at or below freezing point of 32°F.

Once again, we hope everyone enjoyed the day and had a great time.  As you made your way around the field you should have seen many familiar faces. First and foremost you should have seen Mrs. Karen, our Assistant Cubmaster and one of our Wolf Den Leaders who kept the Cub Scout Program running smoothly and watched over the BB range — at the cooking station we had Mr. Luis, one of our committee members, and Mrs. Gladys, one of our Wolf Den leaders — at the Knot Tying station we had Mr. Mike (not Mr. Mikey) one of our Assistant Webelos Leaders, and Mrs. Anna, one of our Assistant Den Leaders — at the rock climbing wall we had Mr. Tom, our Cubmaster, Ms. Avery, our Pack Assistant, and Venturing Crew 1776.

Requirement Notes:

Each cub scout received a lanyard with a badge holder containing a card with their program schedule. Please put your scout’s name on the card and have them bring it to scouts with them so that we may give them credit for what they covered. If there were any stations visited that were not part of his specific program please let us know what station (you can simply describe the station and what was there) and we will then correlate it back to any requirements it may cover.

Fall Fest Tomorrow

Fall-Fest-2014-RevisedWe have great numbers for tomorrow fall fest, it will be a great time and we look forward to seeing everyone there.

Be sure that your scout is prepared, dressed in layers, so he can remove outer layers as the day progresses.  A comfortable scout is a happy scout.  The day will start out pretty cool (45°) climbing to 57-58° by lunch and then peak around 2:30 at 63°.

While lunch will be provided, please be sure your scout has a water bottle and a small snack or two.  All of the activity will require ample fuel and water to keep your scout going throughout the day.  Snacks and beverages shouldn’t contain anything too sugary as that can cause your scout to burn out.

You must bring a copy of the Medical Health Form (parts A & B) for each person. This includes all siblings and adults.  Additionally, you will need a signed copy of the Grandview Hospital release form for every person under the age of 18 years old.  THIS IS MANDATORY!  (Attached Below)

We will meet just outside the parking lot. I ask that you be there by 8:00 AM so that we can register at 8:15. I have all tickets and will register us all at once. As per the event page, registration & check in begins at 8:15 AM with the opening ceremony at 8:45 AM. The Fall Fest is located at Camp Hart, part of the Musser Scout Reservation. Use the address 1125 Camp Road, Pennsburg, PA 18073 to get directions to our parking lot, which is at the corner of Camp and Miller Roads. Coming from the turnpike, you will come north on Rt 63 to Upper Ridge Road. Turn Right onto Upper Ridge Road, go through the stop sign and past the Camp Delmont entrance for just over a mile. Make a right onto Miller Road, the parking lot is at the bottom of the hill on the left..

There are several routes and the ride is about an hour. The map below is directions from the Church to Camp Hart, please choose the route which works best for you.
