Food & Clothing Drive Results

Thank you everyone! After sorting, boxing and weighing the donations, I can honestly say I think we had great success with this food and clothing drive considering the short notice. Here are our total amounts and approximate weights. The apartment fire victims no longer needed clothes (other than socks and undergarments) so all clothing will be going to Purple Heart.

The totals for the fire victims is… food: 65 items weighing 54 pounds, kitchen/housewares: 3 sets of glasses and 7 other items weighing 15 pounds, toiletries: 43 items weighing 31 pounds, crafts: 7 items weighing 14 pounds, toys/instruments: 97 items weighing 62 pounds, books/DVDs/video games: 127 items weighing 52 pounds, towels/bedding: 21 items weighing 25 pounds, shoes: 43 pairs weighing 35 pounds, belts/hats/scarves/socks/undergarments: 118 items/pairs weighing 16 pounds. That’s a grand total of 304 pounds! We are delivering items to the apartment management company (M&M Management) tonight.

The clothing totals are as follows…men: 170 total items weighing 173 pounds, women: 172 items weighing 111 pounds, boys: 177 items weighing 75 pounds, girls: 18 items weighing 18 pounds, infants/toddlers: 63 items weighing 25 pounds and coats: 19 items weighing 23 pounds. That’s a grand total of 425 pounds of clothing!

Thank you everyone from Cub Scout Pack 155, Venturing Crew 1776, Boy Scout Troop 155 and Saints United Lutheran Church who donated their old belongings and their time to those in need.

Fire House Visit

Tiger, Wolf and Bear Parents don’t forget we have an additional meeting next week. We’ll meet Monday as usual, but we will also be meeting on Tues March 31, at 7pm at the FIRE HOUSE. It’s located next to Holmesburg branch library on Frankford Ave (19136). Please have your cubs in uniform.

Pancake Breakfast & Bake Sale Success

Pancake BreakfastI want to extend a hearty thank you to all who attended our first Scout Sunday Pancake Brunch. We had larger than expected turn out for our first run at this and the event was a huge success.

The members of our chartering organization, Saints United Lutheran Church, were nothing but complimentary.  They loved seeing the scouts working tirelessly to ensure everyone had their fill and enjoyed interacting with the leaders to learn about the programs we run.

With the church feeling it was a huge success they not only asked us to do this every year but they suggested we also consider running a spaghetti dinner and summer BBQ; both of which can be used as fundraisers to benefit our scouts.

Once again I’d like to extend a hearty thank you to the following for making this a huge success.

  • Cub Scouts: Thank you to those who attended the Scout Sunday service and to those who volunteered to work the brunch afterwords. Your attendance at the service made a great showing to our chartered organization and allowed them to showcase us to other members of the congregation. While a few of our cub scouts had specialty jobs, most worked as assistant servers and helped with cleanup. Great job to all of you!!!
  • Cub Scout Parents: The parents not only brought their scouts to attend the service but many of them contributed to the bake sale, attended the brunch, and spread the word to families and friends making this event a success.
  • Cub Scout Leaders: All leaders in attendance played a crucial role in the success of this event. Each one worked the entire time and didn’t eat until the end with the scout workers. From dealing with finances, to assisting with cooking, managing the floor, and managing the kitchen — you were busy and you were everywhere. Thank you Anna Andrijischyn, Chris Campagna, Karen Wonsor, Maureen Sytsma, Regina Giuffre, Shawna Tracey, and Tom Sytsma.
  • Saints United Lutheran Church: As our chartered organization a heartfelt thank you goes out to you for not only hosting our scouting units giving us a place to meet but for all of the support you continue to provide us.  We’d also like to thank you for allowing us the opportunity to run this event and for participating in it as well. A special thank you goes out to Lynette Comitalo, the president of the church board, for working with us to coordinate the event.
  • Karen Wonsor: Karen was the driving force behind this event. She not only managed the kitchen like a pro, but she pulled together the resources of three scouting units and managed all of the volunteers from them to run this huge success.

Let’s help the NE fire victims

Hello Pack 155 families. As I’m sure most of you know by now, there was a devastating fire here in the Northeast. 53 families lost all their belongings. We are organizing a food/toiletry/clothing drive. We will be collecting non-perishable food items, socks, undergarments and shoes for men, women and children. We will also be collecting books (adult and children’s), small toys, they need toiletries(soap/shampoo/conditioner/etc). They do need some clothes as of now, mostly for men and women, they have received a lot of children’s clothes. If you have anything else you’d like to donate, please let me know and I’ll see if it’s needed. The children are mostly younger 4-7 and teenagers. Start your spring cleaning. Remember they have lost everything, so any little bit will help, thanks in advance! There will be a trailer to load any donations onto at Monday’s meeting (3/23/15).

**Whatever is donated that is not needed, we will be donating to Purple Heart and/or Big Brothers Big Sisters.

2015 Scout Sunday Pancake Brunch and Bake Sale

Scout Sunday 2015 PatchNext Sunday, March 22nd, is our Scout Sunday Pancake Brunch and Bake Sale.  Scout Sunday is an annual event meant to mark the founding of Scouts in the United States. While the Boy Scouts of America has designated the Sunday preceding February 8th, or February 8th if it is a Sunday, as Scout Sunday; observance varies by unit and locale.  On this day scouts go to their places of worship or chartering organization, if it is a religious institution, in uniform and represent scouting at the service.

It is also a day in which scouts of all faiths recognize the good work done by scouts in their religious communities and through the religious communities that sponsor their unit. For many religious organizations Scouting is the community outreach program of choice for youth and Scout Sunday is a day to give back and allow the members of the institution to meet the scouts and their leaders and allow the parents of the scouts to meet the community and members of the organization that allows us to meet.

Pancake BreakfastThis Scout Sunday, not only will our attendance and participation be a great showing for the Saints United Lutheran Church, our chartering organization — The organization has allowed us to use the opportunity as a fundraiser.  We ask that all scouts, regardless of faith, participate in this event by coming out to represent your unit, in full uniform, as well as helping out at the fundraiser.

Additionally we ask that you spread the word to all your friends and family to come on out and attend the fundraiser (flier attached below).

The schedule of events is as follows:

  • 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM – Service at Saints United Lutheran Church
  • 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM — Pancake Brunch and Bake Sale

Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, and coffee or juice for $5.00 per person.  Pancakes are all you can eat!!!

Note: For those of you bringing baked goods, please bring the baked goods to the gym prior to the service or the day of the Pinewood Derby (March 21st). There will be signups at the table tomorrow night for those who have not yet signed up.

2015 Pinewood Derby

Let's Get Down and DerbyLast month we held our held our fourth annual Pinewood Derby Workshop. It went really smooth and we had a great turn out this year. Several boys and their parents took advantage of the opportunity to get some pinewood derby tips, choose a design, get their cars cut out and sanded down.  Afterwards they had the remainder of the month to get their cars painted, add the wheels and get ready to race.

This year’s Pinewood Derby is next Saturday, March 21st.  Vehicle registration and weigh in will start at 10:00 AM and end promptly at 11:00 AM.  The Pinewood Derby itself will begin at 11:00 AM with the first heat running at 11:15 AM.

REMEMBER, ALL CARS MUST BE REGISTERED AND WEIGHED IN BY 11:00 AM — NO EXCEPTIONS.

Once the race begins new cars will not be accepted under any circumstance.  The software we use to generate the race schedule uses an algorithm that guarantees each car runs on each track at least once and races against different cars each race.  It is impossible, once the first race begins, to add new vehicles to the lineup without starting all over and invalidating the results of any races that already had taken place.   We do not have the time to start over nor is it fair to the scouts who were on time. Therefore we will not be doing so.

SCOUTS MUST BE IN UNIFORM: This is a pack event, and the scouts should be in full uniform.  This will make for much better photos of the scout with his car, which most parents love to take.

Lunch

Lunch will be provided at no cost for the participating scouts. Any parent, sibling or friends may purchase something to eat and drink at a nominal cost, after lunch is served to the scouts.

Good Sportsmanship

This is already in the rules and you would expect that this should never be required to be part of the rules, but it is.  The Pinewood Derby is for the scouts and it is meant to be a fun time for the scout. Sometimes scouts and even parents can take things a bit too far which not only ruins it for the scout, but for other scouts as well. A visibly upset parent will make their child upset and that change in mood will spread to others.

Good sportsmanship is one of the things we teach our Cub Scouts and must be shown at all times.  Bad sportsmanship, regardless of whether it is from a scout or an adult is absolutely forbidden. A scout and his car will be disqualified if the scout, his parents, their guests, or leaders display unsportsmanlike conduct before, during, or after the derby.

The Rules

It is important to make sure that your car adheres to the rules. The rules are attached below.  The rules for our pack are in line with the district rules and strict adherence will be enforced.  If your car does not adhere to the rules it will be unable to race. It is also important to remember that the decisions of the judges are final.

Tiger Parents (3/9/15)

Hello Tiger Cub Parents, tomorrow evening (Mon. 3/9/15) since weather will be a little nicer, the Tigers will be taking a “hike” around the church. Tigers will need to be in weather appropriate clothes and coats as well as sneakers or boots. Parent/Adult partners are urged to come with us. We prefer if you all walk with us, but we will need some of you to. We won’t be walking the entire hour, probably more like 30-40 minutes. See you all tomorrow!

2015 Pinewood Derby Workshop

Pinewood DerbyTomorrow we will have a pinewood derby workshop starting at 12:00 PM.  We will go over the basics of how to turn your block of wood into a pinewood derby car as well as provide cutting services for those who need them.

This is a service for parent and scout, you must be present with your scout to work on his pinewood derby car.  It is also important that you bring your Pinewood Derby Kit, we do not have extras to give away so if you do not have yours any longer, we may have a few extras to sell.

We also ask that anyone with a scroll saw, coping saws, dremel tools (with cutting attachments) or other smaller woodworking tools to please bring them in and assist with cutting.  It would be a huge help.

The Webelos who participated in the Webelos Sleepover will have lunch provided.  Other scouts attending can buy a hotdog lunch for $2-3 which will include a drink and possibly a snack.

Klondike Derby Update

The Klondike Derby *IS* still on for tomorrow.

The Derby will begin around 9:00am Rain or Shine.  There were a few changes sent out by district about an hour ago due to the weather.  Verbatim, here are their changes:

  1. Please be there for check in at 8:30 am. So we may promptly start at 9am.
  2. We are also asking each pack to have a volunteer or two to work at the stations. Some of our older scouts have decided not to attend tomorrow that were supposed to work the stations.
  3. Please remind everyone from your pack that it is their decision whether or not they want to attend tomorrow because of the pending weather. Also to dress for the cold and have rain gear available.
  4. We are also cutting station times down so that we may leave earlier and not have the kids out in the cold too long.

There you have it. With that said; it will be cold and their will be snow, sleet and/or rain. The high for the day is expected to be 38 degrees which means cold and wet.

BE PREPARED but more importantly make sure your boys are prepared.  In addition to dressing properly and bringing the required supplies, bring spare socks, rain gear and a heavy blanket just in case.

Dressing in layers

When it is cold outside and you are going to be out in the elements for an extended period of time it is vital that you dress in layers.  Below is some basic layering advice to assist you

  • Layer 1 – Under garments, heavy socks.
  • Layer 2 – Long Johns
    • If they are the Under Armor type, do not wear a t-shirt underneath it.
    • If you don’t have long johns then a long sleeve shirt and sweatpants work.
  • Layer 3 – Pants & Shirt
    • Pants should be something that can shield the wind; jeans are not good for this; but acceptable if the only alternative
    • Running pants and hiking pants are great, a nylon mixture not cotton.
    • These should be something that do not hold water.
  • Layer 4 – Outer Shell, Coat, Hat, Gloves, Boots, Rain Jacket/Poncho
    • A coat, while not seen as cool anymore, is your best line of defense.
    • Hoodies, even if lined, will not repel wind and moisture.
    • Don’t forget a hat and gloves. Mittens will keep your hands warmer but gloves will provide free fingers. A good combination is cotton gloves inside water proof mittens.
    • Boots are a must *AND REQUIRED*
