2012 Summer Day Camp Summary

Cub Scout InvestigatorsThe Roosevelt District just wrapped up its Summer Day Camp held at the Torresdale Boys Club.  It was a blast for all who participated; cubs, leaders & parents alike.  Summer Camp is not only a great source of summer fun, but it is a tremendous opportunity for the Cub Scouts to get a head start towards their new rank before the new scouting season even starts.

Pack 155 had two boys in attendance; Jared Wonsor who recently moved into the Bear den after earning his Wolf rank and Tommy Sytsma who recently crossed over into the Webelos Den after earning his Bear rank.  Two adult volunteers, two youth volunteers and a young sibling also represented Pack 155 at the Summer Day Camp.  Cubmaster Tom Sytsma and Den Leader Karen Wonsor volunteered a full week of their time as staff members for the camp while their daughters, Avery (12) and Brianna (17) gave up a full week of their Summer break to volunteer as den chiefs.  Tom’s 5 year old, Aedhan, attended as part of the Kiddie Korner which is a program for siblings not yet old enough to participate as scouts.

In order to promote future Summer Camps and try to increase pack participation and maximize opportunities for our members we felt it would be a great idea to fill you in about our week and show you what the boys accomplished in as little as 5-6hours/day for 4 days with the 5th day being pure fun & games culminating in the closing ceremony.

The typical day starts at 9:00 am with the opening where the boys are given water bottles to maintain hydration. These bottles can be filled at the various stations throughout the day.  After the opening, the dens split going to different stations.  They meet up as a group for an hour of pool time and again for lunch. Some days also have special programs for the boys to enjoy. The day ends around 3:15 pm to close out the day.

There were five stations  that the boys rotated through, aside from lunch and the swimming pool.  They were Archery (an obvious favorite), Arts & Crafts, Science & Nature, Scout Skills, and Games & Sports .  With the theme of the camp being CSI: Cub Scout Investigators our special programs were K9 demonstrations & Crime Scene Investigation discussions held by the Philadelphia Police Department.

Friday is the only day that alters from the routine. After the opening ceremony the battle begins. It is an all out water war with *EVERYONE* being fair game.  Unless you are in the rec center or in one of the safe zones, the kids have the freedom to attack you without repercussion. It is 3 hours of water guns, water balloons, buckets of water and if the fire department isn’t on call, they bring a fire truck out and let the hose rain down on the kids.  At noon, a cease fire is called and lunch begins. After lunch everyone at camp is treated (Rita’s water ice this year) and then the closing ceremonies begin.

The closing ceremonies involve each den performing a skit or song, with a few other seasoned scouters doing a few run off skits of their own.  Lastly everyone is awarded their diplomas, certificates of recognition and if they scored some bulls-eyes, a bulls-eye aware from the Archery Instructors.

So what did the boys (L)earn???

I will list what each rank covered and if any of our boys were part of that rank who they were. There is a lot of overlap which isn’t reported here as we are still trying to find out what requirements are the same for multiple things. For example, earning the Astronomy Belt loop serves as one of the requirements to earn the Scientist Activity Badge for Webelos.

Tiger Den

These are the boys who are brand new to scouting and will be entering their pack for the first time in September. They would either be 7 years old or entering 1st Grade in September.  Summer Camp is a huge advantage for these boys as they will have gained some familiarity with the Cub Scout Program by being actively involved in a fun setting before their first year even begins.  Oh and you read that correctly, the tigers completed certain electives multiple times and in different ways.

Camping Weather Update

I just want to make sure everyone is aware of the weather conditions expected this weekend so that you can be fully prepared.

On Saturday we are looking at a high of 58 degrees with a chances of showers throughout the late afternoon/event.  As it stands, the showers, if they occur are expected around 4pm &  6pm.  Overnight the temperature is expected to drop to as low as 35 degrees with a brief showers around 11p, 12a and 3a.  Sunday it will go up to 62 degrees, with a chance of some drizzle in the morning around 6a.

As you can see rain gear is necessary, as well as spare shoes, socks and clothing.  I would also recommend that you bring spare blankets to use in addition to your sleeping bags as well as something to create a barrier between you and the ground for added warmth.

*DO NOT ASSUME* that because your sleeping bag is rated below the temperature it will be that it will keep you comfortable.   The rating on sleeping bags is the temperature at which the sleeping bag will keep you alive. It is not the rating that it will keep you comfortable at. For example, I slept outdoors in a sleeping bag with a rating of 0 degrees.  The temperature dropped to 19 degrees that night and it was not comfortable. I needed to add a wool blanket in my sleeping bag as well as one under my sleeping bag to maintain comfort. Granted 19 degrees is sub freezing, which does make a difference in how things work but the point remains the same. BE PREPARED!

What to Bring Camping

When planning what to take camping or hiking we should always start with the basics of taking care of yourself outdoors.

  • Always Be Prepared
  • Talk to Akela about what you need to bring
  • Never go anywhere alone.  Always have a buddy.
  • Always carry the seven items below.

Outdoor Essentials for Cub Scouts

  • Personal First Aid Kit
  • Filled Water Bottle
  • Flashlight w/spare batteries & bulb
  • Whistle
  • Rain Gear
  • Sunscreen
  • Trail Food
  • Map & Compass
  • Pocketknife (if instructed in use and whittling chip is earned. You must carry your whittling chip with you)
  • Matches or Firestarters – (ONLY IF INSTRUCTED IN USE)

**If you or your child need any medications be sure to bring them and store them in a zip lock bag.**

What you have above, is the basics necessary for taking care of yourself outdoors. It is vital to always have the above with your regardless of the activity type you are participating in.  Now for our camping trip the following items, in addition to the items above, are necessary for this weekend to be a successful and safe weekend.

  • Backpack for your gear
  • Class A Uniform
  • Class B Uniform
  • Scout Uniform hat or billed hat (ball cap)
    • A stocking cap is great to sleep in if you get cold easily
  • Clothes to sleep in (pajamas or sweats)
  • Sweatshirt and/or Jacket
  • Hiking boots (it is recommended that you scotchguard them)
  • Rain Gear (jacket and pants preferred over poncho)
  • Extra shoes, socks & underwear.
  • Extra set of clothes
  • Work gloves (they will be cleaning up trash at the park and each child must have their own pair)
  • Tent, poles, and stakes
  • Waterproof ground cloth (tarp or plastic sheet)
  • Sleeping bag +20 degree recommended (if it has cartoons or super-heroes on it it is NOT a sleeping bag)
  • Sleeping Pad
  • Pillow
  • Extra blanket (optional but could be necessary).
  • Insect Repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Cup or Mug
  • Toilet paper (remove tube, crush and put in zip lock  bag)
  • Toothbrush and Toothpaste
  • Soap, washcloth, towel
  • Cub Scout Handbook (in plastic bag)
  • Good Attitude!

Optional Family Items

  • Camp/Lawn chairs
  • Lantern
  • cooler/ice chest

At the bottom of this post, I have attached a general but comprehensive list of general camping items to bring on camping trips for future reference. Some items in the attached list can and often are brought by others when camping as a group so it is good to coordinate such efforts.

Cub Scout Camping Checklist

Camping Trip – Last Call

Cub Scout Pack 155 Tent CampingWe have not yet received confirmation from all families regarding the Camping Trip two weeks from now. We need confirmation from all families whether or not you will be attending and whether you will be coming up only for the day or to spend the night.  We need an accurate head count for food as well as for the State of Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

I will be finishing up the paperwork and mailing it out to the Park Ranger on Saturday the 14th and we must have a headcount no later than Friday April 13th.

Once I provide the headcount to the park ranger, I will be unable to add people to the list. So it is of utmost important that if your son plans on spending the night at the park you email me as soon as possible at cubmaster -at- cubscoutpack1776.org  or by using the form on the ‘Contact Us’ page with an exact number of how many will be attending.

The cost is $15 per person (not per scout) and will be collected on Monday April 16th.

As a reminder, please be sure to bring the completed health form, parts A & B with you on Monday the 16th. This is required in order to go on the camping trip.  One is attached to this message.

Pinewood Derby

The pinewood derby is this Monday, April 2nd.  The derby will begin at 6:00 pm EDT, with the first heat beginning promptly at 6:15 pm EDT.  We have 5 cars that were not registered for the race during weigh in and registrations last week.  You will have until 5:30 PM EDT on April 2nd to have your car registered for the race and then registrations will be permanently closed.  Someone will be there by 5:00 PM in order to help you weigh in and register.

ALL VEHICLES MUST BE REGISTERED BY 5:30 PM OR YOUR CAR WILL NOT BE IN THE LINE UP.

We have 21 of 26 cars registered and have only a few hours to conduct our race.  Once the race begins new cars will not be accepted under any circumstances.  The software we use to generate the race schedule uses an algorithm that guarantees each car runs on each track at least once and races against different cars each race.  It is impossible, once the first race begins, to add new vehicles to the lineup without starting all over and invalidating the results of any races that already had taken place.   We do not have the time to start over so we will not be doing so under any circumstance.

We had asked that each family of four chip in a total of $5 to cover the cost of pizza and then contribute something small (snacks, drinks, paper products) based on your den.  13 families have contributed their $5.00 so far.  We will be collecting the outstanding balance from those haven’t paid on Monday at the door.

For those who wish to help set up, I will be opening up the gym around 2:00 PM to set up.

April Camping Trip: Health Forms & More

Two weeks ago we distributed health forms at the parent meeting.  All but one family was in attendance so all but one should have their forms.  We have not yet received any of these forms back.  These forms are mandatory for insurance purposes and are required before participation in pack outings is allowed.  Please have these forms with you on Monday April 2nd, one is attached to this post for your reference in case you lost the original.

In addition we need to turn in a final headcount to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (PA DCNR) as soon as possible since we are having at overnight event in a state park that normally does not permit such.  This is also necessary to put together a proper food list.   Due to our not having a meeting on April 9th for Easter Monday, we will need your final decision on Monday April 2nd.  Once we finalize the headcount we will be unable to add additional people due to state requirements.

The cost of the trip, to cover the cost of food and supplies, is $15 per person over scouting age.  There will NO CHARGE for “pack buddies”, who we will define as siblings under scouting age.  Siblings of scouting age and adults are required to pay.  All monies for the camping trip are due no later than Monday April 16th.

We will be publishing a list of items you should have as well as a rough itinerary in the next week.  Please plan now to have a tent.
