Christmas Party Monday Night

scout christmasJust a reminder that Monday, December 18, is our annual Potluck Christmas Party which will begin at 6:30 PM.  We have lots of fun and games planned for the scouts.

Thank you to those who have signed up to bring a dish, snacks, drinks or other items. We are still looking for additional dishes, side dishes, or appetizers for the party. We are good in the snacks area. Just be sure to let us know what you plan to bring by sending an email to signups.

We ask that everyone not assisting with setup arrive after 6:30.  Those who are assisting should try to arrive around 5:00.  We will have an hour and a half to get everything set up so the more help the merrier.

We look forward to seeing everyone; have a great weekend!

P.S.  While Scout Uniforms are not required, there will be a photo opportunity with a special guest that you might wish for your scout to be in uniform for.  You are welcome to make this an opportunity for a family photo as well 🙂

No Meeting Tonight – Turkey Recovery Day!

We hope that the entire Cub Scout Pack 1776 family had a Wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday.  There is no meeting tonight, so kick up your feet, recover from overindulging in good eats, and contemplate all that we are thankful for.

Throughout the course of our lives it is often far easier to ask for favors than it is to give thanks.  When times are dark we often neglect the good we have to be thankful for.  Thanksgiving wasn’t really about Pilgrims, Indians, and turkey dinners; it was a day that was set aside so that we may reflect on all of the good bestowed upon our lives, because even in the darkest hour there is that ray of light to be thankful for despite it always being overlooked.

We can look to the words of George Washington as he makes the first official proclamation of Thanksgiving, on November 26th, 1789 to a fledgling nation. [Read more…]

2017 Scouting for Food Summary

Scouting For Food PatchI want to thank everyone who came out to help us with this year’s Scouting for Food drive; all of the scouts, parents, sibling, former scouts and their families, friends of the pack, the leaders, and Crew 1776.  While Scouting for Food may seem like more work than fun, the program goes a long way to to helping families who worry about where their next meal will come from.

This year, Pack 1776 collected 1,021 food items weighing in a 825.7 lbs. To put this in another perspective we collected almost “one-half ton of food”, all of which was donated to the food bank at St. John’s Lutheran Church who works closely with Saints United Lutheran Church (our Chartered Organization) to provide meals to families in need from 9 different zip codes.

We had 17 cub scouts, 7 other scouts, 1 sibling, 9 adults and 9 leaders participated in this service project with us. Over the two weekends combined, Pack 1776 completed 185 combined service hours.

Scouting for FoodNot only should the scouts be commended for their tremendous efforts but a hearty thank you goes out to all of the parents, siblings and others who helped to make this annual food drive a success. Some walked with a group of kids, others followed behind with a vehicle to collect food items, while others helped unload, count and sort the food. All of the cub scouts had a great time while performing a good turn and they most certainly did their best.

Once again, thank you to everyone involved.

Note: All Cub Scouts that participated have had their service hours added to Scoutbook.

Clothing Drive

Good morning everyone. Tonight is last night we’re collecting donations of clothes and shoes for our clothing drive. So if you have a bag, please bring it to our meeting tonight. Every little bit helps. Thanks so much everyone. See you tonight.

2017 Chick-fil-A Trunk or Treat

Update: Due to the recent weather Chick Fil A has decided to go with the rain date of Thursday, Oct 26th, from 5pm – 8pm. Hope to see you all there.

Chick-fil-A Trunk or Treat

Just a reminder that Chick-fil-A at Whitman Square is hosting its 4th annual “Trunk-or-Treat” this evening, from 5-8pm. This is a community event for children and their families to celebrate Halloween in a family-friendly and safe environment.

Trunk-or-Treat allows children (with adult supervision) to Trick-or-Treat in a unique way where community businesses will bring out their company cars to create a “neighborhood” of vehicles and distribute candy and other free promotional items. Make sure to have your kids wear their costumes!

They will have music, fun, games, prizes, and giveaways!

2017 Revolutionary Germantown Summary

Revolutionary Germantown

We had several scouts attend the festivities at Revolutionary Germantown.  Everyone had a great time exploring what life was like in Colonial America before watching a reenactment of the Battle of Germantown.

Throughout the course of the day our scouts participated in many hands on activities that let them not only learn how things were done in Colonial America but they were able to try many of those tasks themselves. Some of the activities were:

  • Making paper from old rags
  • Weaving baskets and paper by hand
  • Spinning wool into yarn
  • Weaving textiles on a hand-held loom
  • Making Tricorn hats
  • Coring Apples
  • Churning ice cream
  • husking acorns and making acorn flour
  • Trying different types of jellies and jams all made with period correct recipes and methods.
  • They met General Washington.
  • They met British and Colonial soldiers.
  • They were recruited and mustered like soldiers
  • and so much more..

Those in attendance completed the following requirements:

Tigers

Wolves

Bears

Webelos/AOL

Revolutionary Germantown 2017

Revolutionary GermantownThis weekend the groups that serves to preserve historic Germantown will be hosting their annual festival.  When we think of colonial cities we naturally think of Philadelphia but we often forget that what now makes up Philadelphia’s neighborhoods were once their own cities and towns lying in the outskirts of Philadelphia. Germantown was one such city located 7 miles North of Philadelphia. Visiting this neighborhood is literally visiting a city within a city filled with historical sites of its own such as the Germantown White House and Chew Mansion to name a couple.

There will be several events going on through out the day including a couple of live shows, which include two reenactments of the Battle of Germantown.

The boys who attend this event will have the opportunity to fulfill several requirements, listed below. Some do require the boys to interact and or work with others to complete.  Below is a list of what the boys in attendance can fulfill throughout the day.

What to Bring

You really don’t need to bring much besides yourselves.  You could purchase food and drink down there but it is much more cost effective to bring your own lunch which can also help with meeting the Picnic requirements.  This is a rain or shine event so be sure to be prepared. As they say “the show must go on.”  On that note a blanket to sit on while eating lunch is another option to make the day more enjoyable.  Also a notebook and pen to take notes for some of the requirements is a plus too.

To summarize; all are optional as you will have to carry them but recommended:

  • Lunch
  • water
  • blanket (to sit and eat lunch)
  • notepad and pen
  • rain gear
  • camera
  • The boys should wear their scout uniforms, or as much of their uniform as they have.

Who To Look For

There will be several people from the pack in attendance you can check into at the event.  All you need to do is say hi and let them know you are there. We will be meeting at 10:00 am on the lawn of the the Upsula, directly across the street from the Cliveden House/Chew Mansion.

  • Kristine, our Bear Den Leader, will be there. She will be the primary lead on this event and will be wearing her Class A uniform to make herself easier to find.
  • Karen, our Assistant Cubmaster, will be there as is the secondary contact for this event.
  • Other leaders attending will be: Kristyn Bair, Tigers Den Leader; Dan Griess, Webelos Den Leader; and other leaders will be added as they confirm their attendance.

Lunch Suggestion: The first battle is at 12:00 noon.  We will be having lunch at 11:15 so we are finished with lunch prior to the noon reenactment. Lunch will likely be in one of the corners of the property. Kristine and Karen will choose a lunch location when they arrive on site and will let everyone know at the morning meeting.

Activities

Each year the event gets bigger and better. This year several of the additional sites are including their own hands on activities. Additionally between the 12:00 and 3:00 Battles there will be a Children’s Muster at Upsala from 1:30-2:30. This will be a chance for your scout to see what it was like to sign up and drill in the Continental Army.

Solar Eclipse

As most of you know, this Monday there will be a total solar eclipse. But did you know you can earn a patch for experiencing such a rare event? To provide context to the rarity of this event, the last time a total solar eclipse was visible anywhere in the mainland United States was in February 1979 and the last time a total solar eclipse was visible across the entire contiguous United States was in June 1918. The next two total solar eclipses to cross the United States will be in April of 2024 and August 2045.

Venturing Crew 1776 will be hosting a Eclipse picnic party for all the scouts that meet at Saints United Lutheran Church from 11:30AM to 4:30PM so that the scouts can watch the eclipse, work on the patch requirements, and have fun. For anyone that missed the Hickory Run camping trip, this is a great opportunity to get in an August Pack Activity.

If your interested in joining us please RSVP at cubmaster@cubscoutpack1776.org. Families that participate are asked to bring a snack such as chips, pretzels, dips, cookies, brownies, etc.

For those that want to make the eclipse viewing box, bring your supplies and we can work together building them.
