This archive includes posts relating specifically to those Webelos Scouts who are in their second year and have already earned their Webelos rank. These scouts are 5th graders who are in at least their second year of scouting and are working towards their Arrow of Light, the highest award available in Cub Scouting. The Arrow of Light is the only Cub Scout Specific award that carries over into the Boy Scouts.

Calling all 1776 families! (Program Updates)

Happy weekend, Pack 1776 families! We hope all of the scouts are having a great start to the school year, although we know it looks a bit different. Parents and guardians, please check your email. Our cubmaster has sent out an update with guidelines and program ideas for the 2020-2021 scouting year. Included in the email is a 1-2minute survey that we are asking all parents/guardians to fill out in order to help us plan for our program. The survey results and guidelines will be discussed at a zoom parent meeting on Monday Sept 21st, at 7pm. The zoom link and login information will be sent via email that morning.

If you did not receive this email, check spam. If it is still not there, please do not hesitate to reach out to us via email, or on Facebook messenger and we will make sure you get it. Any questions you may have can be filled out on the survey and addressed during the parent meeting. We look forward to seeing familiar faces on zoom and hopefully finding our way back to the scouting trail, safely, soon.

What a fun Open House!

A warm thanks to everyone who came out tonight to the Cub Scout Pack 1776 Open House. We saw many new faces, as well as our dear familiar ones. The children thoroughly enjoyed “SCIENCE!” With Dan, electrical circuitry with Mike, Catapults of Fun and corn hole with Nora and Digging for Dinosaurs with Kristine. We all had an evening of learning through fun, comradery, and laughs. A special thank you to the boy scouts and venturing crew (both of 1776) who assisted us tonight, and of course to Regina, our Cub Master, who met with all of the parents.  We really have a great group here, and we very much look forward to expanding our cub community! See     you all next week!

Oh the fun we had at Valley Forge

We had a wonderful (approx) 5 mile hike at Valley Forge last month. The weather was perfect and the company even better.  It was a nice turnout for scout attendance and even though the paths we took did not lead us to he dinosaur fossils, there’s always next time!  Way to go Cubs Dennis, Evan and Megan! You are 1/3 of the way toward your summer participation badge! Blue and Gold

Dear Parents,
Can you believe that the end of our scouting year is upon us? Where did the time magically go? Just a moment ago it was September and we were just starting the year and then POOF!!! It is over. We are having our end of year Blue and Gold Banquet on June 2, 2018. The doors open at 12:15 and the banquet starts at 1:00. Tickets are available. Each scout gets a ticket for themself and 2 tickets for parents. Any extra tickets are $5.00 each. Payment at the door is acceptable. Head counts are needed by May 30th. We look forward to ending the year with the same spirit that we have had all year!

Arrow of Light Update 3/12/18

Arrow of Light Adventure: Building a Better World

Tonight the AOL den came up with activities for the den to do together as part of the Building a Better World adventure. As a den, we participated in all of the suggested activities, which ranged from a walk to collect rocks to identify and share with the den, to various games. It was a fun evening where each cub got to be a leader in organizing their individual activity plan.

Arrow of Light Adventure: CamperNext week, we will tackle part of the Outdoorsman (Camper) adventure. This is an important one as the skills required are essential to all of the outdoor activities cub scouts experience. You never know what can pop up weather or emergency wise, so these skills will be invaluable. We are asking that each cub review the Outdoorsman (called Camper in the handbook) chapter and research any related topics with their families so that they are ready for next week.

Please note that there is some memorization required, and they will need to demonstrate a bowline knot

Reminder: Second Year Webelos Troop Visitation

Arrow of Light Adventure: Scouting Adventure

A reminder that the second year Webelos Scouts (5th grade) will be visiting Troop 155 this evening from 7:00 PM until 8:00/8:30 PM. During this visit they will complete several requirements for the Scouting Adventure, which was designed to provide scouts with an introduction to Boy Scouting, Scout skills, and Scout spirit. This adventure, which can be found on page 178 of the Webelos Handbook, is part of the second requirement to earn the Arrow of Light.  Location Info Below!

It should also be noted that the Scouting Adventure, and ultimately the Arrow of Light requirements, exceed the requirements for the first rank in Boy Scouts (Scout) and completes some of the second rank requirements (Tenderfoot) as well

Specifically, the scouts will be completing the following requirements:

  • Requirement 2: Visit a Boy Scout Troop meeting
  • Requirement 2a: Describe how the Scouts in the troop provide its leadership
  • Requirement 2b: Describe the four steps of Boy Scout advancement
  • Requirement 2c: Describe ranks in Boy Scouting and how they are earned.
  • Requirement 2d: Describe what merit badges are and how they are earned.
  • Requirement 3a: Explain the patrol method. Describe the types of patrols that may be part of a Boy Scout troop.

If time permits they will also cover some of requirements 1 & 5.

IMPORTANT LOCATION INFORMATION:

Troop 155 meets at Saint John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at 3101 Tyson Ave (Tyson & Hawthorne). The entrance to the meeting location is actually on Tyson Ave (3116 Tyson) and is through the single brown door, with an office sign, to the left of the fenced in play area. Once you enter the door, walk all the way down the hall at at the end of the hall you will turn left down a flight of steps into the scout meeting area.

Webelos 1 & 2 Update – 11/13/2017

Webelos Elective Adventure: Art ExplosionOn Monday, both Webelos dens worked together on the Art Explosion adventure. In this adventure Webelos Scouts discovered that exploring the arts is a fun way to try new things! They had the opportunity to develop their creative potential while making original works of art after discovering what inspired them during their visit to a virtual art museum. When sharing their project ideas with each other, the Webelos Scouts had the opportunity to respect the creations of others while valuing their own ideas.

The Webelos scouts completed Art Explosion Requirements 1, 2, 3b, 3c, and 3i meeting all of the requirements to complete this adventure.  The scouts were encouraged to go through the Art Explosion adventure in their handbooks and consider working on any of the optional sub-requirements in requirement 3 and the optional requirement 4 for some additional exploration into the arts.

2017 Whittling Chip Update (Bears & Webelos Update)

Whittling Chip CardOn Monday, January 16th, the Bears and Webelos continued their knife safety training by covering some more detailed parts of a pocket knife, the different types of pocket knives, how to choose a good pocket knife, the rules, safety, and the care of a pocketknife.  We also reviewed what was covered last week.

The scouts were given a worksheet to complete as a homework assignment.  This worksheet (attached below), must be turned in along with a signed permission form (also attached) in order for your scout to complete his whittling chip.  Without these, your scout cannot participate in the final part of the training.

On Monday, January 23rd, we will complete the whittling chip course by having the scouts practice what they learned with apples, bars of soap, and if time permits we may allow some of them to use other pocket knifes to try whittling a piece of wood.

  • For Bears this course will complete the Bear Claws Adventure  and allow your Bear to earn his Whittling Chip Card.
  • For 1st year Webelos this isn’t a requirement for rank but the training is required to allow your Webelos to earn his Whittling Chip Card. The first year den leader may opt to skip the hands on portion of the training and work on other requirements.
  • For 2nd year Webelos this is one of the requirements for the Arrow of Light Scouting Adventure.
  • For returning Webelos who have already earned their Whittling Chip Card, this training is required by the pack in order to upkeep the privilege of the whittling chip.

Attached below are a parent letter describing the course, a copy of safety rules and care tips they can keep, and a parent permission slip. Your scout must sign the permissions slip to acknowledge the rules, and a parent or guardian must also sign the slip acknowledging the rules and giving the scout permission to participate and earn his whittling chip. This slip along *MUST* be turned no later than Monday January 23rd.  Without this, your scout cannot earn his whittling chip.

2017 Whittling Chip (Bears & Webelos Update)

Whittling Chip CardOn Monday, January 9th, the Bears and Webelos began their annual Knife Safety training. This class is designed to teach knife safety and additional rules that must be followed.  While this course is required for Bears and 2nd year Webelos Scouts who have not already earned it, the pack requires any scout who has previously earned their whittling chip to take the training annually.

Bears should immediately start reading the Bear Claws adventure which can be found on page 30 of their handbooks.

We started by covering the following: what the whittling chip is; the whittling chip pledge and what it means as well as how it pertains to safety; the basic parts of the knife; how to pass a knife to another; the safety/blood circle; the difference between a tool and a weapon; how the pocket knife is a weapon at schools; the no school rule; and an introduction to various bladed items with their differences and validity of their use.

On Monday, January 16th, we will continue our knife safety course by covering some more detailed parts of a pocket knife, the different types of pocket knives, how to choose a good pocket knife, the rules, safety, and the care of a pocketknife.  This will reinforce what we covered last week and expand upon it.

On Monday, January 23rd, we will complete the whittling chip course by having the scouts practice what they learned with apples, bars of soap, and if time permits we may allow some of them to use other pocket knifes to try whittling a piece of wood.
