2018 Pinewood Derby Workshop

Pinewood DerbyTomorrow we will have a pinewood derby workshop starting at 10:00 AM.  We will be handing out the Pinewood Derby car kits along with the rules for the Pinewood Derby. Then we will go over the basics of how to turn your block of wood into a pinewood derby car as well as provide cutting services for those who need them.

This is a service for parent and scout, you must be present with your scout to work on his pinewood derby car.

We also ask that anyone with a scroll saw, coping saws, dremel tools (with cutting attachments) or other smaller woodworking tools to please bring them to assist with cutting.  It would be a huge help.

Since the work shop will encroach on the lunch hour we will have hot dog lunches available for $3 which will include a hot dog, a juice, and a snack. Other snacks will be available as well.

Wolf Update 3/12/2018

Wolf Elective Achievement: Digging In The PastThis week the wolves finished the Digging in the Past adventure.  We also covered the difference between “all the time” snacks and “sometimes” snacks as well as the needs of a hike.

Next week we will review bad weather camping scenarios.

Arrow of Light Adventure: Building a Better World

Tonight the AOL den came up with activities for the den to do together as part of the Building a Better World adventure. As a den, we participated in all of the suggested activities, which ranged from a walk to collect rocks to identify and share with the den, to various games. It was a fun evening where each cub got to be a leader in organizing their individual activity plan.

Arrow of Light Adventure: CamperNext week, we will tackle part of the Outdoorsman (Camper) adventure. This is an important one as the skills required are essential to all of the outdoor activities cub scouts experience. You never know what can pop up weather or emergency wise, so these skills will be invaluable. We are asking that each cub review the Outdoorsman (called Camper in the handbook) chapter and research any related topics with their families so that they are ready for next week.

Please note that there is some memorization required, and they will need to demonstrate a bowline knot

Bears Update 3/12/2018

Bear Adventure: Bear NecessitiesOn Monday, the Bears began working on the core adventure Bear Necessities to prepare for upcoming camping trips in spring and summer.

We discussed some of the items that our Bears have taken camping in the past, as well as what items they should always bring to be prepared; how to pick a decent spot for a tent site; and what to look out for when setting one up.

Afterwards the scouts learned how to properly set up and take down a tent, practicing with an 8-man tent that they could all run around in.

Weblos Update

Webelos and Arrow of Light Elective Adventure: Adventures In Science

On Monday, The Voyagers, yet again, blasted off into Adventures in Science. They read and discussed a biography on Thomas Edison. Next week, we will take a virtual tour of a museum to wrap up The Adventures in Science requirement. With the warm weather and camping season quickly approaching we will start working on some of our outdoor activities to wrap up our Webelo’s badge.

Things to remember: This Saturday, March 17, 2018 is The Pinewood Derby Car Workshop from 10am-2pm.
As previously discussed, The Cyber Chip is required annually for our scouts to earn their rank. Please make sure you are completing with your scouts.

Tiger Den Update.

Tiger Adventure: Tigers In the Wild

This week the Tigers worked with both the Lion and Wolf dens. The Tigers completed Requirement 1 and Requirement 3(b) of Tigers in the Wild Adventure. They discussed the Cub Scout Six Essentials needed for a hike including how to prepare for the rain.

The Tigers also learned the difference about healthy food choices and not so healthy food choices. They made “mud” using pudding and whip cream and created their own creations out of fresh fruit and tooth picks.

Tiger Den Update 2/26/18

This week all Den’s worked together and planted a variety of plant seeds. The Tigers were asked to draw and share some of the plants, trees, and/or shrubs that they would see on a hike or during a typical walk around neighborhood. They were then given the opportunity to examine plant leaves, roots, and soil with a magnifying glass. While the Tigers planted their tomato and wild flower seeds, they learned about the needs and growth of the plants. This completed requirement #4 of the My Tiger Jungle Adventure.

As a reminder, please have your scouts bring their handbooks to our weekly meetings. The handbook will allow the scouts see what requirements they have already completed and it will also give them the opportunity to be able to choose what they would like to work on in future meetings.

 

Webelos Update 02/26/2018

Webelos Badge

On Monday the Webelos den continued our “ADVENTURES IN SCIENCE“. We covered requirement 3a by planting tomato seeds in 2 different types of soil; “fertilized soil” and “standard potting soil” to see if “fertilized soil” is better than “standard soil”.

Next week we will be continuing our adventure by creating circuits using light bulbs and batteries

Coin Wars Concluding

As you may seen by now, Venturing Crew 1776 is hosting a coin war fundraiser at the pack to help raise funds for a high-adventure camp this summer. The fundraiser started on Feb 5th, and will end on Feb 26th. This means there is only ONE meeting left to try and help your den win!

Each den has a bin, with our younger and smaller dens having a joint bin, that is located at the snack bar. Add any loose change you have to your den’s bin in order to obtain positive points towards your total score! Each cent is equal to one point, so a quarter is worth 25 points. If you want to sabotage another den, add dollar bills to their bin! Each dollar takes away 100 points from the den.

At the end, our Venturers that serve as Den Chiefs will count up the points for each den and announce the winning den at the following meeting. After the winning den is announced, that den will get to vote on what prize item they wish to have from a list that the crew has created.

Webelos Update- February 19, 2018

Webelos and Arrow of Light Elective Adventure: Adventures In ScienceOn Monday February 19th, the Webelos Den worked on The Adventures in Science requirement 3g of the Webelos Handbook. The Scouts explored safe chemical reactions with household materials by using two substances and then observed what happened when the amounts of the reactants were increased.

Working together, they inflated a balloon using baking soda and vinegar. The goal of the project was to demonstrate the power of gas produced when the baking soda and vinegar are mixed. The goal is for the balloon to be blown up by the gas created.

If your Scout did not attend Mondays meeting, they can complete this requirement at home using the following instructions:

What materials are required?
• Balloon (1)
• Small bottle (cleaned glass beverage bottle will work well) (1)
• Small funnel (1)
• Baking soda (2 tablespoons)
• Vinegar (4 ounces)

Where can the materials be found?

Most materials can be found at the dollar store.

Experiment
1. Using the funnel, add the baking soda to each balloon (two people may be needed for this; one person to hold the balloon open and the other person to put the baking soda inside of the balloon).
2. Pour the vinegar into the bottle.
3. Carefully fit the balloon over the bottle opening (be careful not to drop the baking soda into the vinegar yet).
4. Once the balloon is fitted snugly on the nozzle, hold up the balloon and allow the baking soda to fall into the vinegar.
5. Observe the chemical reaction and effect on the balloon.
6. Record observations.
