2017 Whittling Chip Update (Bears & Webelos Update)

Whittling Chip CardOn Monday, January 16th, the Bears and Webelos continued their knife safety training by covering some more detailed parts of a pocket knife, the different types of pocket knives, how to choose a good pocket knife, the rules, safety, and the care of a pocketknife.  We also reviewed what was covered last week.

The scouts were given a worksheet to complete as a homework assignment.  This worksheet (attached below), must be turned in along with a signed permission form (also attached) in order for your scout to complete his whittling chip.  Without these, your scout cannot participate in the final part of the training.

On Monday, January 23rd, we will complete the whittling chip course by having the scouts practice what they learned with apples, bars of soap, and if time permits we may allow some of them to use other pocket knifes to try whittling a piece of wood.

  • For Bears this course will complete the Bear Claws Adventure  and allow your Bear to earn his Whittling Chip Card.
  • For 1st year Webelos this isn’t a requirement for rank but the training is required to allow your Webelos to earn his Whittling Chip Card. The first year den leader may opt to skip the hands on portion of the training and work on other requirements.
  • For 2nd year Webelos this is one of the requirements for the Arrow of Light Scouting Adventure.
  • For returning Webelos who have already earned their Whittling Chip Card, this training is required by the pack in order to upkeep the privilege of the whittling chip.

Attached below are a parent letter describing the course, a copy of safety rules and care tips they can keep, and a parent permission slip. Your scout must sign the permissions slip to acknowledge the rules, and a parent or guardian must also sign the slip acknowledging the rules and giving the scout permission to participate and earn his whittling chip. This slip along *MUST* be turned no later than Monday January 23rd.  Without this, your scout cannot earn his whittling chip.

2017 Whittling Chip (Bears & Webelos Update)

Whittling Chip CardOn Monday, January 9th, the Bears and Webelos began their annual Knife Safety training. This class is designed to teach knife safety and additional rules that must be followed.  While this course is required for Bears and 2nd year Webelos Scouts who have not already earned it, the pack requires any scout who has previously earned their whittling chip to take the training annually.

Bears should immediately start reading the Bear Claws adventure which can be found on page 30 of their handbooks.

We started by covering the following: what the whittling chip is; the whittling chip pledge and what it means as well as how it pertains to safety; the basic parts of the knife; how to pass a knife to another; the safety/blood circle; the difference between a tool and a weapon; how the pocket knife is a weapon at schools; the no school rule; and an introduction to various bladed items with their differences and validity of their use.

2016 Whittling Chip

Whittling Chip CardOn Monday, February 8th, the Bears and Webelos began their annual Knife Safety training. This class is designed to teach knife safety and additional rules that must be followed.  While this course is required for Bears and 2nd Year Webelos Scouts who have not already earned it, the pack requires any scout who has previously earned their whittling chip to take the training annually.

We started with an introduction to various bladed items, teach them the differences, and validity of their usage. We then cover a series of safety requirements and went over some quiz style questions to reinforce what they learned.

On Monday February 22nd, we will complete this course by having the scouts carve a few items. Those who missed the first week will need to be taken aside to cover the basics of knife safety and will be able to complete the second half of the course during one of the upcoming camping trips.

  • For Bears this course will complete the Bear Claws Adventure  and allow your Bear to earn his Whittling Chip Card.
  • For 1st year Webelos this isn’t a requirement for rank but the training is required to allow your Webelos to earn his Whittling Chip Card.

That said, the scouts were handed a letter and a permission slip with the safety rules. These are attached below along with a homework sheet and a copy of safety rules and care tips they can keep.  Your scout must sign the permissions slip to acknowledge the rules, and a parent or guardian must also sign the slip acknowledging the rules and giving the scout permission to participate and earn his whittling chip. This slip along *MUST* be turned in on Monday February 22nd.  The homework sheet is due by Monday February 29th. Without these, your scout cannot earn his whittling chip.

Webelos Update 10/12/2015

Webelos Adventure: First Responder

Last night, both the Webelos 1 and Webelos 2 dens began working on the First Responder Adventure.  This is a Webelos 1 Required Adventure and an Elective for Webelos 2 Scouts.

The Adventure is designed to provide Webelos Scouts wiht an introduction to the skills and responsibilities of a first-responder. Activities will cover essential personal safety and first-aid skills.

Some of the takeaways for this adventure are:

  • Essential first-aid skills
  • Essential personal safety skills
  • Understanding of the role of the first responder in the local community
  • A Scout is brave, courteous

The adventure requirements are listed in page 58 of the Webelos handbook and all requirements were touched on. We even had one of our scout parents who is a first responder come in and pay the boys a visit. With a red cross instructor coming out in February to give the scouts an opportunity to become certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED, we intentionally chose not to go too deep into this Adventure.

 

 

 

 

Monday 09/28/15 Recap

As a pack we covered the concepts of game design and game play.  While this is a specific objective of one of the Webelos Elective the other dens were naturally intrigued and wished to join in on the game making fun.

The topics covered were elements of game design, five online safety rules while using the Internet, creating a game and teaching others how to play the game.  They then got together and played an old game called SPUD with some slight variations.

Requirements completed were as follows:

Rocket Launch

imageHouston has given us clearance for take off! I will see everyone at Lincoln’s field at 6PM. Let’s hope nobody is playing baseball there!

Webelos Rocket Launch

imageHello Webelos parents! I am planning on launching the model rockets this Monday, 6PM, at Lincoln field. (Right across the street from our church). If the weather is bad or the winds are too strong, the launch will be canceled until next Monday, April 6th. All scouts are invited to come over and watch. Please bring a folding chair.

Webelos update 3-9-15

Webelos BadgeTonight, a number of boys passed their Webelos badge or their Arrow of Light award. Congratulations! A few boys still have to visit a Boy Scout troop to earn their Arrow of Light. That is scheduled for next week.
After the review for their ranks, all Webelos worked on the Heritages belt loop. They may need help with some of their family members’ names and their countries of origin. Completing the Heritages belt loop is the last requirement for the Family member activity that they started last week.
Next week, the first year Webelos and Jared will be working on their Scientist Activity. All other Webelos will be sitting in on Troop 155’s meeting.

Webelos update 2-28

Webelos BadgeThis week, we will begin working on our Webelos badge and the Arrow of Light award. Im asking that the parents of the first year Webelos please read the Webelos badge requirements and sign off on Requirements 1 and 8 in the handbook. The boys need to bring their books in with them on Monday. The second year Webelos do not need to get anything signed but they should bring in their books to help prepare for the Arrow of Light.

Bears & Webelos Progress Report – Feb 16, 2015

Whittling Chip CardOn Monday, February 16th, the Bears and Webelos completed their Knife Safety training. This class was designed to teach knife safety and additional rules that must be followed.  While this is a requirement for Bears, the pack required Webelos scouts to re-certify their training each year.

ALL PREVIOUSLY ISSUED WHITTLING CHIPS HAVE EXPIRED AND ARE NO LONGER VALID

Our program took 2 den meetings and started last week with an introduction to various bladed items, their differences, and the validity of their use. We then covered a series of safety requirements and sent home a permissions slip and some home work which had to have been turned back in.

Last night we collected the permission slips (we do not award a whittling chip without parent/guardian permission), went over the homework assignment, and went into more detail about the safety circle. We then broke up into small groups of 3 scouts and practiced everything learned, including whittling a bar of soap.

Whittling ChipFor the bears, who attended both sessions, this completed Bear Achievement 19: Shavings and Chips and your Bear had earned his Whittling Chip and will receive a Whitlin’Chip Patch. This is a temporary patch which can be centered on the wearer’s right pocket (not the pocket flap).

For the Webelos, who attended both sessions, this renewed your Whittling Chip and you will receive a new dated card. We will note on the card the previous dates you earned it as well, if you’d like.

We may or may not have activities that allow the use of a pocketknife and having an up to date whittling chip card is a requirement to participate in such activities. Without said card, the scout is not permitted to have a pocketknife nor use a pocketknife at scout functions.
