Camping at Ockanickon Scout Reservation

Cub Scout Pack 155 Tent CampingOur first camping trip of the season, to Ockanickon Scout Reservation, is just a couple of weeks out. It is time to start collecting headcounts and payments.

It is preferred that you email us your headcounts to signups@cubscoutpack1776.org. As well as on the sign up sheet that will be available tonight and next monday. Even if you previously told someone that you were attending, we still need you to sign up.

Scout Night at The Phillies Tickets

The tickets for the Phillies game on Sunday April 22nd will be available for pickup at the Monday night meeting.  In the event that you cannot make the Monday night meeting. Please reach out to Sandi Ramos, using the contact information provided on the flier you were handed, to make arrangements.

Those scouts who wish to participate in the pregame parade around the field should be in full uniform and try to make it to the park by 11:45. You must be at the top of the ramp, located outside the ballpark, located at the Northeast corner of the ballpark (Phillies Drive & Darien Street), no later than 12:15 PM.  There is only allowed to be 1 adult per 6 scouts; Sandi is the point of contact, so please be sure you provide her with correct contact information in the event she needs to reach you.

The pack will be sitting in section 241, which is in left field. So the closest parking lots to the seats will be R, V, or S and the parking lots closest to where those in the parade will need to meet is Q or P.

Tigers Update- April 9th

Tiger Elective Achievement: Safe and Smart

Safe and Smart

 

 

This week the Tigers completed requirements 3 and 4 of the Safe and Smart Adventure which completes this elective  for the Tigers. We reviewed what we have learned in prior weeks and they showed that they can “Stop, Drop, and Roll.” and demonstrated how to safely roll someone else in a blanket to put out a fire. The Tigers then joined the Lions and Wolfs for some physical fitness fun!

 

 

 

 

 

As a reminder: Each rank requires that scouts earn the Cyber Chip award in order to earn their rank. If you have not done so already, please complete the following:

1. Read, commit to, and sign the Level 1 Internet Safety Pledge. (BSA Cyber Chip blue card).
2. Watch the video “Bad Netiquette Stinks.” at http://www.netsmartzkids.org/LearnWithClicky/BadNetiquetteStinks
3. Play the Router’s Birthday Surprise Interactive Adventure, and print the completion certificate to give your den leader.
4. Show and tell your family, den leader, den, or pack what you have learned.

2018 Whittling Chip (Bears Update)

Whittling Chip CardOn Monday, April 9th, the Bears began their Pocketknife Safety training. This class is designed to teach pocketknife safety and additional rules that must be followed when using a pocketknife. Bears should immediately start reading the Bear Claws adventure which can be found on page 30 of their handbooks as well as the handouts they were given Monday night (see below).

We started these series of classes by covering the following: what the whittling chip is; the whittling chip pledge; the difference between a tool and a weapon; how the pocket knife, although a useful tool, is considered a weapon in schools; the no school rule; an introduction to various bladed items with their differences and validity of use; the basic parts of the knife; and how to pass a knife to another.

We ask that you ask review these materials with your scout, ask them to show you how they are to properly hand off a pocketknife and help reinforce it at home with any bladed items.

On Monday, April 16th, we will continue our knife safety course by reviewing what was already covered, go into more detail about the parts of a knife, the different types of pocket knives, how to choose a good pocket knife, the rules, safety, and the care of a pocketknife.

Finally, we will have a third installment where we will complete the whittling chip course by having the scouts practice what they learned with apples and/or bars of soap; if time permits we may allow some of them to use other pocket knifes to try whittling a piece of wood.

These next few weeks will complete the Bear Claws Adventure  and allow your Bear to earn his or her Whittling Chip Card. We may have activities that allow the use of a pocketknife and having a whittling chip card is a requirement to participate in such activities.

Attached below are a parent letter describing the course, a copy of safety rules and care tips they can keep, and a parent permission slip. Your scout must sign the permissions slip to acknowledge the rules, and a parent or guardian must also sign the slip acknowledging the rules and giving the scout permission to participate and earn his whittling chip. This slip along *MUST* be turned before your scout will be permitted to use a knife for this adventure.

2018 Pinewood Derby Champions

Let's Get Down and DerbyI would like to thank everyone who came out this weekend for our 2018 Pinewood Derby. It was a huge success and it appeared that all of the scouts had a great time. I would like to thank those who volunteered their time to help run the derby and make the event the success that it was. Thank You!

2018 Scout Day at the Phillies

Reminder that final headcount and payment for Scout Day at the Phillies, is due on Monday April 9, 2018.

Scout Night/Scout Day are special events held by the Philadelphia Phillies for Scouts and their families at reduced ticket prices. This year’s event is April 22, 2018 and it is the Philadelphia Phillies vs the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tickets include:

  • A pre-game parade on the field for all scouts in full uniform, one adult per 6 scouts
  • A special 2018 Scout Day Phillies Patch
  • Fans under 14 will receive a TastyKake Obudel Hererra Emoji Cap
  • Units with 25 or more tickets get their name listed on the side auxiliary message boards during the game.

As stated above, if you haven’t yet signed up, you will need to move fast.  We have about 20-25 of the 50 reserved seats remaining at a cost of $16 each.  The seats will be in Section 241, rows 1-5, seats 8-17.

Important Notes:

  • Headcount and Payment is due Monday April 9th, 2018.
  • If your scout wishes to participate in the on field pregame parade, they must be in full uniform.

2018 Pinewood Derby

Let's Get Down and DerbyThree weekends ago we held our held our sixth annual Pinewood Derby Workshop. It went really smooth and we had a great turn out this year. Several boys and their parents took advantage of the opportunity to get some pinewood derby tips, choose a design, get their cars cut out and sanded down.  Afterwards they had last week and the rest of this week to get their cars painted, add the wheels and get ready to race.

This year’s Pinewood Derby is this upcoming Saturday, April 7th.  Vehicle registration and weigh in will start at 10:00 AM and end promptly at 11:00 AM.  The Pinewood Derby itself will begin at 11:00 AM with the first heat running at 11:15 AM.

REMEMBER, ALL CARS MUST BE REGISTERED AND WEIGHED IN BY 11:00 AM — NO EXCEPTIONS.

Once the race begins new cars will not be accepted under any circumstance.  The software we use to generate the race schedule uses an algorithm that guarantees each car runs on each track at least once and races against different cars each race.  It is impossible, once the first race begins, to add new vehicles to the lineup without starting all over and invalidating the results of any races that already had taken place.   We do not have the time to start over nor is it fair to the scouts who were on time. Therefore we will not be doing so.

SCOUTS MUST BE IN UNIFORM: This is a pack event, and the scouts should be in full uniform.  This will make for much better photos of the scout with his car, which most parents love to take.

Preregistration

For those that would like to preregister for the derby this weekend, we will have the scale available at the scout hall Friday evening from 7:00p – 8:00p in the Scout Room. You can check the weight of your car and if it is ready to go you may register it so you are all set for Saturday morning.

Lunch

Lunch will be provided at no cost for the participating scouts. Parents, sibling or friends may purchase something to eat and drink at a nominal cost, after lunch is served to the scouts.

Good Sportsmanship

This is already in the rules and you would expect that this should never be required to be part of the rules, but it is.  The Pinewood Derby is for the scouts and it is meant to be a fun time for the scout. Sometimes scouts and even parents can take things a bit too far which not only ruins it for the scout, but for other scouts as well. A visibly upset parent will make their child upset and that change in mood will spread to others.

Good sportsmanship is one of the things we teach our Cub Scouts and must be shown at all times.  Bad sportsmanship, regardless of whether it is from a scout or an adult is absolutely forbidden. A scout and his car will be disqualified if the scout, his parents, their guests, or leaders display unsportsmanlike conduct before, during, or after the derby.

The Rules

It is important to make sure that your car adheres to the rules. The rules are attached below.  The rules for our pack are in line with the district rules and strict adherence will be enforced.  If your car does not adhere to the rules it will be unable to race. It is also important to remember that the decisions of the judges are final.

Congratulations Pack 1776!

Klondike Banner

Congratulations to the scouts who attended this year’s Klondike Derby, A Winter Jungle. Their combination of scout spirit, team work, and ability to complete the tasks at hand, as they went from station to station, earned Cub Scout Pack 1776 a first place win for the second year in a row. Those who attended the Klondike Derby are welcome to attend the April round table, on Wednesday April 11, to be recognized for their accomplishment.

Once again, congratulations!

2018 Pinewood Derby Workshop

Pinewood DerbyTomorrow we will have a pinewood derby workshop starting at 10:00 AM.  We will be handing out the Pinewood Derby car kits along with the rules for the Pinewood Derby. Then we will go over the basics of how to turn your block of wood into a pinewood derby car as well as provide cutting services for those who need them.

This is a service for parent and scout, you must be present with your scout to work on his pinewood derby car.

We also ask that anyone with a scroll saw, coping saws, dremel tools (with cutting attachments) or other smaller woodworking tools to please bring them to assist with cutting.  It would be a huge help.

Since the work shop will encroach on the lunch hour we will have hot dog lunches available for $3 which will include a hot dog, a juice, and a snack. Other snacks will be available as well.

Wolf Update 3/12/2018

Wolf Elective Achievement: Digging In The PastThis week the wolves finished the Digging in the Past adventure.  We also covered the difference between “all the time” snacks and “sometimes” snacks as well as the needs of a hike.

Next week we will review bad weather camping scenarios.
