2016 Pinewood Derby

Let's Get Down and DerbyTwo weekends ago we held our held our fifth annual Pinewood Derby Workshop. It went really smooth and we had a great turn out this year. Several boys and their parents took advantage of the opportunity to get some pinewood derby tips, choose a design, get their cars cut out and sanded down.  Afterwards they had last week and the rest of this week to get their cars painted, add the wheels and get ready to race.

This year’s Pinewood Derby is this upcoming Saturday, March 19th.  Vehicle registration and weigh in will start at 9:30 AM and end promptly at 11:00 AM.  The Pinewood Derby itself will begin at 11:00 AM with the first heat running at 11:15 AM.

REMEMBER, ALL CARS MUST BE REGISTERED AND WEIGHED IN BY 11:00 AM — NO EXCEPTIONS.

Once the race begins new cars will not be accepted under any circumstance.  The software we use to generate the race schedule uses an algorithm that guarantees each car runs on each track at least once and races against different cars each race.  It is impossible, once the first race begins, to add new vehicles to the lineup without starting all over and invalidating the results of any races that already had taken place.   We do not have the time to start over nor is it fair to the scouts who were on time. Therefore we will not be doing so.

SCOUTS MUST BE IN UNIFORM: This is a pack event, and the scouts should be in full uniform.  This will make for much better photos of the scout with his car, which most parents love to take.

Lunch

Lunch will be provided at no cost for the participating scouts. Parents, sibling or friends may purchase something to eat and drink at a nominal cost, after lunch is served to the scouts.

Good Sportsmanship

This is already in the rules and you would expect that this should never be required to be part of the rules, but it is.  The Pinewood Derby is for the scouts and it is meant to be a fun time for the scout. Sometimes scouts and even parents can take things a bit too far which not only ruins it for the scout, but for other scouts as well. A visibly upset parent will make their child upset and that change in mood will spread to others.

Good sportsmanship is one of the things we teach our Cub Scouts and must be shown at all times.  Bad sportsmanship, regardless of whether it is from a scout or an adult is absolutely forbidden. A scout and his car will be disqualified if the scout, his parents, their guests, or leaders display unsportsmanlike conduct before, during, or after the derby.

The Rules

It is important to make sure that your car adheres to the rules. The rules are attached below.  The rules for our pack are in line with the district rules and strict adherence will be enforced.  If your car does not adhere to the rules it will be unable to race. It is also important to remember that the decisions of the judges are final.

2016 Pinewood Derby Workshop

Pinewood DerbyTomorrow we will have a pinewood derby workshop starting at 10:00 AM.  We will be handing out the Pinewood Derby car kits along with the rules for the Pinewood Derby. Then we will go over the basics of how to turn your block of wood into a pinewood derby car as well as provide cutting services for those who need them.

This is a service for parent and scout, you must be present with your scout to work on his pinewood derby car.

We also ask that anyone with a scroll saw, coping saws, dremel tools (with cutting attachments) or other smaller woodworking tools to please bring them in and assist with cutting.  It would be a huge help.

Since the work shop will encroach on the lunch hour we will be hot dog lunches available for $3 which will include a hot dog, a drink, and a snack.

2016 Whittling Chip

Whittling Chip CardOn Monday, February 8th, the Bears and Webelos began their annual Knife Safety training. This class is designed to teach knife safety and additional rules that must be followed.  While this course is required for Bears and 2nd Year Webelos Scouts who have not already earned it, the pack requires any scout who has previously earned their whittling chip to take the training annually.

We started with an introduction to various bladed items, teach them the differences, and validity of their usage. We then cover a series of safety requirements and went over some quiz style questions to reinforce what they learned.

On Monday February 22nd, we will complete this course by having the scouts carve a few items. Those who missed the first week will need to be taken aside to cover the basics of knife safety and will be able to complete the second half of the course during one of the upcoming camping trips.

  • For Bears this course will complete the Bear Claws Adventure  and allow your Bear to earn his Whittling Chip Card.
  • For 1st year Webelos this isn’t a requirement for rank but the training is required to allow your Webelos to earn his Whittling Chip Card.
  • For 2nd year Webelos this is one of the requirements for the Arrow of Light Scouting Adventure.
  • For returning Webelos who have already earned their Whittling Chip Card, this training is required by the pack in order to upkeep the privilege of the whittling chip.
  • We may or may not have activities that allow the use of a pocketknife and having a whittling chip card is a requirement to participate in such activities.

That said, the scouts were handed a letter and a permission slip with the safety rules. These are attached below along with a homework sheet and a copy of safety rules and care tips they can keep.  Your scout must sign the permissions slip to acknowledge the rules, and a parent or guardian must also sign the slip acknowledging the rules and giving the scout permission to participate and earn his whittling chip. This slip along *MUST* be turned in on Monday February 22nd.  The homework sheet is due by Monday February 29th. Without these, your scout cannot earn his whittling chip.

2016 First Aid, CPR, AED Course

First AidJust a reminder that this weekend we are hosting First Aid, CPR, and AED certification training.  These are official American Red Cross certification and the certifications last for 2 years.  All leaders, parents and  4th and 5th grade Webelos scouts are invited to take the course.  Parents, if you need to renew your certification for work, this is an opportunity to save on renewal.

Due to the cancellation of Monday’s meeting, those who have not yet signed up may simply send an email to let us know if you and/or your scout will attend. We need an accurate head count before the weekend.

Important Notes:

  • The cost is $30 per person.
  • Please pack a lunch, drinks and snacks, there will *NOT* be time to run out and pick up lunch.
  • We will start accepting registration and payment at 8:00 AM and starting the class at 8:30.
  • The class is expected to complete by 3:00
  • It is recommended that you bring materials to take notes.

Webelos Parents:  This course will cover many of the requirements for the Readyman Activity Badge (Second year Webelos finishing in the old book) and many of the requirements for the First Responder Adventure for those in the new books (first year Webelos and new second year Webelos).  Not only will your scout earn his First Aid certifications but will cover most of what is needed for these rank requirements. Your scout’s participation will make it much easier to complete his rank requirements.

Note: For the Webelos taking the course, if the instructor does not feel the scout has the strength or endurance to perform CPR she cannot give them their CPR certification. However they can still earn their First Aid and AED certifications.

Please send an email with your headcount or questions to cubmaster@

Thank you and enjoy the rest of your week.

Feb 15th Meeting Cancelled Due To Weather

Thank you to those who have signed up to bring a dish, snacks, drinks or other items. We are still looking for more juice products and additional snacks or dishes are always welcome.

We ask that everyone not assisting with setup arrive after 6:30.  Those who are assisting should try to arrive around 5:30.  We will have an hour to get everything set up so the more help the merrier.

We look forward to seeing everyone tonight!
