Webelos and Arrow of Light Progress Report – April 28th, 2014

On Monday the Webelos and Arrow of Light dens worked on the Handyman Activity Badge.

We covered some good stuff with the boys that ranged from working with bicycles to minor maintenance on cars.  They learned how to tighten and lubricate the chain on their bikes as well as fixing a flat and adjusting the seat or handlebars.  On cars, they learned how to change a tail light, check the oil, air pressure and how to assist with changing a tire.

All that remains to complete the Handyman Activity Badge is Requirement 1

Webelos & Arrow of Light Progress Report – April 7th 2014

On Monday, we started off with a discussion of the plant project done several weeks ago. This discussion completed the Science Belt Loop for those who participated in the first part of the experiment.  Earning the Science Belt Loop also completed Requirement 4 of the Scientist Activity Badge; completing the activity badge for several boys.

We continued to collect homework on the Communicator Activity Badge, thus completing the activity badge for the boys who attended the March 31st meeting and turned in their assignments.

Finally with camping and hiking season starting to peek out from behind colder days, we continued with reviewing some of the basics required to complete the Outdoorsman Activity Badge. Note that most of the requirements require your scout to actually go hiking or camping to finish the requirements, however we like to prepare the boys by discussing some basic safety tips for hiking and camping as well as what gear to bring.

To date, the following Outdoorsman requirements were covered either in Den or at other Activities. If your scout did not participate, you can work on these at home or let us know when we go camping in May.

  • Requirement 2: Outdoor Activity including a campfire (Fort Mifflin Camping Trip – September).
  • Requirement 3: With your Parent or Guardian, take part in a Webelos den overnight campout or family campout. Sleep in a tent that you have helped pitch (Fort Mifflin Camping Trip – September).
  • Requirement 6: Participate in an outdoor conservation project with your Den or a Boy Scout Troop. (April 5th at playground with Mr. Gallen or April 6th at Veterans Home assisting with the Eagle Scout Project & Mayfair Cleanup Project with Mrs. Karen) .
  • Requirement 7: Discuss the rules of outdoor fire safety, show how to build a safe fire and put it out. (Klondike Derby Preparations & 4/4 (Web 2))
  • Requirement 9: Discussion Only – (Scout needs to do a 3 mile hike to complete)

Calling all parents

Before tonight’s den meeting we would like to make some important announcements to our scout parents. We will need about 15 minutes to go over sign ups and any recent changes to the schedule. Thank you for all you do and see you tonight !

Webelos Reminders for 4/7/14

All Webelos Scouts (Both Webelos and Arrow of Light) need to be sure to turn in any outstanding assignments from the season so far. Also, for those who have not yet done so, please bring in your handbooks.

Please remember to bring back the results of your plant project to discuss; you are encouraged to bring your plants too. This will complete the Science Belt Loop. Additionally don’t forget to complete the assignments and turn in the homework given out last week in order to complete both the Communicator Activity Badge and Computers Belt Loop.

This week we will cover some of the requirements for the Outdoorsman Activity Badge. This should wrap up Outdoorsman for most of the 2nd Year Webelos and give the 1st Year Webelos a head start.  Next week we will start on the Engineer Activity Badge.

2014 Pinewood Derby

Pinewood DerbyEarlier today we held our held our third annual Pinewood Derby Workshop. It went really smooth, as expected.  Several boys and their parents took advantage of the opportunity to get some pinewood derby tips, choose a design, get their cars cut out and sanded down.  All they have to do this week is get their cars painted, add the wheels and get ready to race.

This year’s Pinewood Derby is this Saturday April 12th. Vehicle registration and weigh in will start at 10:00 AM and end promptly at 11:00 AM.  The Pinewood Derby itself will begin at 11:00 AM with the first heat running at 11:15 AM.

REMEMBER, ALL CARS MUST BE REGISTERED AND WEIGHED IN BY 11:00 AM

Once the race begins new cars will not be accepted under any circumstance.  The software we use to generate the race schedule uses an algorithm that guarantees each car runs on each track at least once and races against different cars each race.  It is impossible, once the first race begins, to add new vehicles to the lineup without starting all over and invalidating the results of any races that already had taken place.   We do not have the time to start over and will not be doing so.

NOTE: THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.

Lunch will be provided at no cost for the participating scouts. Any parent, sibling or friends may purchase something to eat and drink at a nominal cost, after lunch is served to the scouts.

We will be setting up the gym Friday evening starting at 7:00 PM.  Anyone who wishes to help is welcome.  If we have enough help we will allow early registrations and weigh-ins.  Even if you aren’t willing to commit your car for the next morning’s race it is a great opportunity to find out if your car meets the requirements so you have some time to make any final adjustments.

It is important to make sure that your car adheres to the rules. The rules are attached below.  The rules for our pack are in line with the district rules and strict adherence will be enforced.  If your car does not adhere to the rules it will be unable to race.
