Your Mission: Sign Up For Day Camp!

Day Camp is a five day, fun-filled experience that offers opportunities for all levels of Cub Scouting, from Tigers to Webelos, to participate in activities that are designed to build mental fitness, physical skills and character…and it is A LOT OF FUN!

While we will always have regular camp activities such as nature, science, woodcraft, leather craft, shooting sports and fishing (where available)…we also get to include fun themed crafts and activities from the belt loop & pin requirements too.

Day Camp dates run from June through August and are located all over council convenient to your home.  Time is roughly 9:00am – 3:00pm but varies slightly by location.  Sign up for one, two, or more and keep your Scout having fun, meeting other Scouts and even earning rank during the summer!

Have a sibling? Bring them along!  Ages 3-6 are in Kid Korner/Tot-Lot, ages 7-10 get the full Scout program!

Have an older sibling or Scout?  They can help as a Den Chief. (See requirements)

Adults who volunteer all week can bring their Cub Scout to camp for FREE!

Academics and Sports Program

With the many upcoming events, such as the end of school, summer sports, and of course our own Blue & Gold ceremony, I wanted to take some time to go over some additional achievements the boys can accomplish throughout the school year and in their summertime activities.  They can earn special pins and belt loops for many activities and interests they are already involved in.  It can also be an incentive for the boys to try out new things.  There is a list in the back of the Tiger Cub Book, pgs 153- 155, for the available categories.  The boys can earn these not only as Tiger Cubs, but even as they move up the Cub Scout ranks.  The requirements and worksheets for each achievement can be found online @ http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Cub_Scout_Worksheets

If you have any questions feel free to contact me at any time.

Blue & Gold Rescheduled to Monday June 11th

It has come to our attention that some parents were still following an old calendar for the date of the Blue & Gold.  We replaced that calendar when Pack leadership was restructured making the web site Calendar the final authority for pack events mentioning that if it is not on the web site calendar it is not expected to happen. However, there has still been some confusion.

While the date people thought the Blue & Gold was to take place was never on the web site Calendar, a few people assumed that to be the date despite the real date being up there.  What added to the confusion was the fact that the final date was the old date transposed (May 12th vs May 21st).  Naturally at a quick glance it is easy to confuse the two dates.

Once we determined the source of this date conflict, we felt it prudent to reschedule the Blue & Gold to a date which allows us ample time to make sure that *EVERYONE* is aware of the date. The new date of the Blue & Gold is going to be Monday June 11th at 6:00 pm.

Thank you for your patience in allowing us to ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding this important event.  We will be contacting families individually with the new date to ensure that everyone is properly informed.

Handbooks Required on Monday May 7th

It is extremely important that on Monday May 7th every boy has their handbook.  What is even more important is that parents have signed off on any achievements, electives, activities that your boys have completed at home, school, or other non-scout activities.  As we have mentioned on many occasions, some things can only be completed at home with the parents or families.  In order for your boys to earn their rank we need to make sure all the requirements are met.

So please, go through your son’s handbook and be sure to bring it Monday.  This is the last opportunity to get credit before the Awards.

Scout Day at The National Constitution Center

I just want to remind everyone that this weekend is Scout Day at the National Constitution Center.  This is one of the best low-cost events you could take your scout to.  Rarely do you see so many requirements, electives, and activity badges covered by a single event lasting only 6 hours (9:00a – 3:00p) surrounded by the history of our nation. It would be a crime to miss out on an opportunity like this.  The items covered per rank are listed below.

While this event is not a “pack event”, but rather an individual event, those who do go should meet up so we can stick together in groups, broken down by den if required.

The price is $14 per scout and $12 per adult and includes all programs, admission to the National Constitution Center, and a commemorative patch. The price does not include food.  You will need to provide your own lunch.  Details on who to contact for the event are in the calendar item (click here).

If you plan on going please contact us using the form on the site or via email, so we can be sure to meet up on Sunday.

Camping Weather Update

I just want to make sure everyone is aware of the weather conditions expected this weekend so that you can be fully prepared.

On Saturday we are looking at a high of 58 degrees with a chances of showers throughout the late afternoon/event.  As it stands, the showers, if they occur are expected around 4pm &  6pm.  Overnight the temperature is expected to drop to as low as 35 degrees with a brief showers around 11p, 12a and 3a.  Sunday it will go up to 62 degrees, with a chance of some drizzle in the morning around 6a.

As you can see rain gear is necessary, as well as spare shoes, socks and clothing.  I would also recommend that you bring spare blankets to use in addition to your sleeping bags as well as something to create a barrier between you and the ground for added warmth.

*DO NOT ASSUME* that because your sleeping bag is rated below the temperature it will be that it will keep you comfortable.   The rating on sleeping bags is the temperature at which the sleeping bag will keep you alive. It is not the rating that it will keep you comfortable at. For example, I slept outdoors in a sleeping bag with a rating of 0 degrees.  The temperature dropped to 19 degrees that night and it was not comfortable. I needed to add a wool blanket in my sleeping bag as well as one under my sleeping bag to maintain comfort. Granted 19 degrees is sub freezing, which does make a difference in how things work but the point remains the same. BE PREPARED!

What to Bring Camping

When planning what to take camping or hiking we should always start with the basics of taking care of yourself outdoors.

  • Always Be Prepared
  • Talk to Akela about what you need to bring
  • Never go anywhere alone.  Always have a buddy.
  • Always carry the seven items below.

Outdoor Essentials for Cub Scouts

  • Personal First Aid Kit
  • Filled Water Bottle
  • Flashlight w/spare batteries & bulb
  • Whistle
  • Rain Gear
  • Sunscreen
  • Trail Food
  • Map & Compass
  • Pocketknife (if instructed in use and whittling chip is earned. You must carry your whittling chip with you)
  • Matches or Firestarters – (ONLY IF INSTRUCTED IN USE)

**If you or your child need any medications be sure to bring them and store them in a zip lock bag.**

What you have above, is the basics necessary for taking care of yourself outdoors. It is vital to always have the above with your regardless of the activity type you are participating in.  Now for our camping trip the following items, in addition to the items above, are necessary for this weekend to be a successful and safe weekend.

  • Backpack for your gear
  • Class A Uniform
  • Class B Uniform
  • Scout Uniform hat or billed hat (ball cap)
    • A stocking cap is great to sleep in if you get cold easily
  • Clothes to sleep in (pajamas or sweats)
  • Sweatshirt and/or Jacket
  • Hiking boots (it is recommended that you scotchguard them)
  • Rain Gear (jacket and pants preferred over poncho)
  • Extra shoes, socks & underwear.
  • Extra set of clothes
  • Work gloves (they will be cleaning up trash at the park and each child must have their own pair)
  • Tent, poles, and stakes
  • Waterproof ground cloth (tarp or plastic sheet)
  • Sleeping bag +20 degree recommended (if it has cartoons or super-heroes on it it is NOT a sleeping bag)
  • Sleeping Pad
  • Pillow
  • Extra blanket (optional but could be necessary).
  • Insect Repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Cup or Mug
  • Toilet paper (remove tube, crush and put in zip lock  bag)
  • Toothbrush and Toothpaste
  • Soap, washcloth, towel
  • Cub Scout Handbook (in plastic bag)
  • Good Attitude!

Optional Family Items

  • Camp/Lawn chairs
  • Lantern
  • cooler/ice chest

At the bottom of this post, I have attached a general but comprehensive list of general camping items to bring on camping trips for future reference. Some items in the attached list can and often are brought by others when camping as a group so it is good to coordinate such efforts.

Camping Trip – Last Call

Cub Scout Pack 155 Tent CampingWe have not yet received confirmation from all families regarding the Camping Trip two weeks from now. We need confirmation from all families whether or not you will be attending and whether you will be coming up only for the day or to spend the night.  We need an accurate head count for food as well as for the State of Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

I will be finishing up the paperwork and mailing it out to the Park Ranger on Saturday the 14th and we must have a headcount no later than Friday April 13th.

Once I provide the headcount to the park ranger, I will be unable to add people to the list. So it is of utmost important that if your son plans on spending the night at the park you email me as soon as possible at cubmaster -at- cubscoutpack1776.org  or by using the form on the ‘Contact Us’ page with an exact number of how many will be attending.

The cost is $15 per person (not per scout) and will be collected on Monday April 16th.

As a reminder, please be sure to bring the completed health form, parts A & B with you on Monday the 16th. This is required in order to go on the camping trip.  One is attached to this message.

Bear Achievements & Electives

As a service to parents, in order to be able to readily access the requirements and electives their boys need while out and about, we began posting all of the achievements & electives for each rank.  We are pleased to announce that all of the Bear Cub Achievements on the Bear Trail and all of the Bear Cub Electives for the Bear Arrow Point Trail have been completed.  However, it is not all that is done.  The Achievements for Tiger Cubs and the Achievements for Wolf Cubs are also complete, however the electives for both of these ranks are still in progress and Webelos information has not yet begun.

Eventually, we will create a menu item for the ranks but until they are finished it was decided to leave the menu item out to avoid unnecessary indexing of the site by search engines as the lists update and change.

So how do you access this information?

On the website, in the upper right hand corner, there are icons representing each of the Cub Scout ranks from Bobcat (required by all cubs) through Webelos. You can simply click on any of these icons and you will be taken to the page for the respective rank.

Rank Icon Links

Alternatively you can simply add the rank to the end of our website url.  For example; http://cubscoutpack1776.scouting1776.org/bear  will take you directly to the bear page.  If you need a shortened url to share the link you can simply use http://cubpack155.org/bear

Right now the site isn’t optimized for smaller screens (phones, tablets, etc..) however I will make it responsive in the future so that it will automatically reformat itself according to the device you are browsing on.

I hope you find this useful and make use of it when you are out with your son so you can look up achievements and electives that you can cover together as a family. Once complete simply sign off on it in the book and show me his book.

Home Depot

  Exciting News:

Our local Home Depot, 4640 Roosevelt Blvd, is hosting a free Kid’s Workshop on April 7th from 9am-12pm.  It is for children ages 5-12 and this week they are making a bird feeder. This would be a great event to take your scout to. They get the experience of working with tools and get to bring home a bird feeder they made themselves.

Requirements Covered

For Tigers it would cover:

  • Elective 2: Making Decorations
  • Elective 32: Feed the Birds

For the Wolves it would cover:

  • Achievement 5e: Make a birdhouse, a set of bookends or something else useful.
  • Elective 3a: Make something useful for your home or school.
  • It would assist with Elective 13 (which is part of the World Conservation Award)
    • 13a: Make a list of all the birds you saw in a week and tell where you saw them.
    • 13b: Put out nesting material (short pieces of yarn and string)
    • 13e: Feed wild birds and tell which birds you fed
    • 13f: Put out a birdhouse and tell which birds use it (substituting feeder for house)

For the Bears it would cover:

  • Achievements 5b:  Build or make a bird feeder or birdhouse and hang it in a place where birds can visit safely
    •  Your new feeder can be used to help complete 5a
  • If your family members assist, it could be used to complete achievement 10b: making something useful for the home
  • Depending on how involved it is, we may be able to use it as a substitute for achievement 20b: Build your own toolbox

For Webelos it would cover:

  • Craftsman Requirement #2
  • It would assist with;
    • Naturalist Requirements #5, #6, #8, #9, and #10

  Hope to see everyone there.
