Terrific Time at National Night Out!

A big shout out and thank you to everyone who supported this wonderful community event, especially Ronni Faith Lotto for organizing this massive gathering and, of course, our local police force. It’s always a pleasure to reconnect with old friends and businessss, but so much better when you meet and connect with so many new ones as we did tonight! One of my most favorite things about scouting is the comraderie and bonding amongst the scouts and leaders. We truly become family. We enjoy one another immensely. We join together and work together, complementing one another…and  tonight was no exception as all of our branches came out to represent.  In case you weren’t aware,  1776 is comprised not only of Cub Scouts (boys and girls) but also includes Boy Scouts and Venturing Crew (co-ed).  This means we not only spend a few years together, but grow and journey together until adulthood. Though we love our little group just way we are, we are always excited for new members and can’t wait to welcome into our group the many new faces we met tonight.  Community is only as strong and upstanding as it’s members and we are proud to foster that in our children.  So, thank you for your support and we hope to see you at our open house in September 😊

Oh the fun we had at Valley Forge

We had a wonderful (approx) 5 mile hike at Valley Forge last month. The weather was perfect and the company even better.  It was a nice turnout for scout attendance and even though the paths we took did not lead us to he dinosaur fossils, there’s always next time!  Way to go Cubs Dennis, Evan and Megan! You are 1/3 of the way toward your summer participation badge! Can’t wait to see who joins us in August!!  Have a happy and safe summer ☀️ check out some pictures! https://scouting1776.sharepoint.com/:i:/r/teams/PackLeaders/Shared%20Documents/Photos/20190622%20-%20Valley%20Forge%20Hike/IMG_4623.JPG?csf=1&e=PeEY2I

Fort Washington Camping Trip

Cub Scout Pack 1776 is scheduled to camp at Fort Washington State Park this August 9th-11th. The cost for the trip will be $20 per person and includes includes: Saturday Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Campfire Snacks; and Sunday Breakfast. If you plan on attending please email dgriess@cubscoutpack1776.org. I will be available at the church to drop off money on  July 10th and 24th from 7-8pm. I will also be able to collect payments at our fishing trip on July 13th.

Fort Washington State Park is rich in modern recreational facilities and historical significance. The park takes its name from the temporary fort built by George Washington’s troops in the fall of 1777, before heading to Valley Forge. Fort Washington blossoms with flowering dogwood in the spring and the park is popular with hikers and picnickers. The seasonal migration of raptors is enjoyed by many avid birders from the parks observation tower.

Fort Washington has 3.5 miles of trails, fishing, a disc golf course, a softball field and lots of space to play and do activities.  Scouts are welcome to bring bikes, fishing gear, and those scouts who have earned their whittling chip will be allowed, with parental approval, to bring their pocketknives.

Hiking Success!

First I would like to thank all those who attended the hike. It was a tough call waiting until the last minute to decide if we were going to hike or not but God was rooting for us and the weather panned out nice.  We got off to a late start and covered three miles.  While it was about 2 miles less than planned we did hit some pretty rugged trails making those 3 miles easily feel like 5-6; some of those climbs definitely got the heart pumping making for a great little work out for all.

Naturally we took several hydration breaks, had a nice lunch 130′ feet up at Indian Lookout and explored nature learning about poison plants, the state flower and more.  we had a decent turn out of family members who joined us as well; parents, grandparents and siblings.

We’d like to thank everyone that came out.  Due to your participation in today’s hike the pack met all requirements for the National Summertime Activity Award acknowledging that our pack offered a quality year round program.  50% of our scouts earned the individual national summertime award by participating in one pack activity a month through June, July & August and a couple of our Dens also earned the honor by having a 50% participation rate, meaning at least half of the den attended at least 1 activity per month.

Wissahickon Hike

Akela HikingAs we approach our final Summer Activity, it is now time to start getting yourself in hiking mode.  Let’s start with some details about the hike itself.  We will be hiking approximately 4-5 miles in Wissahickon Park.  The hike will begin and end at the Valley Green Inn.  There will be several stops to take a drink and a longer stop for lunch.  With stops and lunch the hike should take approximately 4-5 hours.

Wissahickon Park is a scenic and scout friendly park. There is a lot of nature to see as we stroll through the scenic river gorge with statues, large rocks, streams and enough natural views to have you disbelieving that you are still in the city of Philadelphia.

As with any other scouting event, preparation is key. It is august and naturally it will be a hot summer day.  Maintaining hydration, adequate energy levels and protecting your skin are the three most important things to keep in mind. EVERY Person, youth & adult, will be required to carry a filled water bottle with them as well has have some trail snacks and a bagged lunch with them.

Remember you will need to carry whatever you bring for the entire 5-6 miles so it is important to not overdo it. Each boy should be able to carry his own gear. If there is any doubt then it is recommended that he bring a backpack to carry his stuff.  Certain items will be necessary to keep on his person.

So what do you need to bring along?  Let’s get right down to it…Baloo Hiking
