Hiking Summary

Baden-Powell HikerThanks to all who came out for our hike in Pennypack Park.  The hike was a bit longer than expected but it was a pretty flat trail.  Those of us who stuck through to the end did a little extra loop and hiked a total of 5.1 miles in 3 hours and 2 minutes.  This time included our stops and breaks throughout the hike.

All in all we had good hike.  We found poison ivy and its natural cure, jewel weed.  Kids got to see some fish over at the damn and got a good workout.  Hopefully after they got home they were good and tired for mom & dad.

Over the summer we will go hiking in Wissahickon Park again and get to see some really cool scenery.  It will be about a 3 mile hike but the terrain will be a bit more rugged.

2013 Blue & Gold

Pack 155 Blue and GoldAs a reminder to all, we are having our Blue & Gold on Saturday March 16th at 5:00pm.  This will be a ticketed event as we are providing a banquet style dinner and will need a proper headcount.  Each family will receive up to 4 tickets, at no cost.  Additional tickets will cost $5.00 per ticket.  Any tickets sold at the door will cost $10.00 each.

These tickets are not transferable to other families and we ask that you only request what you need so we can get an accurate head count.  We have volunteers who will be working hard for several days to pull this off and we ask that you respect their efforts by helping us get a proper head count so that we can prepare accordingly.

We will need a final headcount from all families, no later than Monday March 11th at 8:00 pm. Even if you can’t make the den meeting on the 11th please give us a call or send us an email with your headcount so that we can have your tickets waiting for you at the door.

Webelos Progress Report – February 25, 2013

Last night we completed requirement 5 of the Forester Activity Badge.  For anyone who missed last week or this week, Forester is a really straight forward and easy Activity Badge to complete.  The entire thing can be knocked out in about 30-45m if working one on one with a parent using the guidelines in the handbook.  Although there are 10 requirements total, only 5 need to be completed to earn the badge. Any 5 will suffice.

To complete the Activity Badge at the den meetings, we covered requirements 3, 4, 5, 6, & 9.  If anyone is interested in the handouts we used to complete this requirement just shoot us an email via the Contact Us page and we will get them out to you. Be sure to check off Cubmaster or Webelos Den Leader.

Webelos Progress Report – February 18th, 2013

Tonight we covered requirement 7 for the Webelos Rank; Demonstrate the Scout salute, Scout sign and Scout handshake. Explain the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout motto and Scout slogan. All of these can be found in the Webelos Handbook on pages 53-58.

We also began working on the Forester Activity Badge. With Hiking and Camping season making their approach, we felt this was a great introduction to the world around us.  Specifically we worked on requirements 3, 4, 6 & 9.  At our next den meeting we will finish requirements 5 & 6, while continuing to discussing more about the topic and finishing up with the Outdoor Code which can be found on page 346 of the Webelos Handbook.

This is the last activity badge required for the Webelos to earn their rank. It is important that if your scout is not here, he get this done before March 11th. I had erroneously said that Athlete was the last but the three required are Fitness, Citizen and we will use Forester as the elective (that is not in the same category as Fitness and Citizen).

Homework

Everything that we covered so far for Forester can be found in the Webelos Handbook. There are no special handouts or paperwork this week.  However for those who did not make it tonight, I will need someone to sign off that these were covered at home.  For all scouts, please have your scout read over the Forester section of the Webelos handbook.

Bear Book Collection – 2/18

Baloo HikingDear Bear Cub Parents,

Please make sure the boys bring in their books 2/18 as I will be collecting them to update any achievements they have accomplished at home. This is very important as we are closing in on our Blue and Gold Ceremony, and we are very close to all the boys earning their rank at that time, if they have not already.

Thanks and have a wonderful day,
Chris Campagna II
Bear Den Leader

Webelos Progress Report – February 11, 2013

This week, the Webelos started reviewing the remaining requirements for the Webelos Rank. Specifically covered requirements 3, 4, 8a, 8b and then discussed what was needed to complete requirements 8e and then 8c.  Requirement 8 is about Faith and as such 8e and 8c must be done at home. You can find all of details about the requirements in the Webelos handbook and on the Webelos Badge page on our site.  Next week we will go over requirement 7, finishing up the Webelos Badge requirements.

Once we finish up requirement 7, the Webelos will be given a choice of which activity badge they want to work on next. We will need to finish this one up fairly quickly to ensure it is done by March 11th before the Blue & Gold.

I can’t stress enough the importance of the boys finishing up their assignments they were handed out thus far this year. There are 3 boys that have not turned in their requirements to finish up Fitness and several who have not finished Citizen. Once these are done and we complete the last Activity Badge by March 11, the boys will have earned their Webelos rank and be awarded it at the Blue and Gold.   Any boys who do not finish by then are still eligible to earn their rank but they will not earn it at the Blue & Gold rank ceremony.

Webelos Progress Report – February 4, 2013

Sorry for the delay in getting this posted.  Maintenance on the backend of the site was being performed and I didn’t want to risk losing the post and having to post it again.

Last Monday night the Webelos started working on their Athlete Activity Badge. This is the 3rd activity badge we covered in entirety to be used towards the Webelos rank.  Anyone who completed their Fitness Activity Badge and Citizen Activity Badge will have completed the three Activity Badge requirement for the Webelos Rank upon completion of Athlete.

We taught the boys basic exercises that build strength and endurance and helped them perform a baseline of where they currently stand. They are then to try and improve each area over a 30 day period, tracking their progress once per week. On week 5 they are required to bring in their forms and we will test them one more time to show them how their improvement indicates they are growing stronger.

We completed Webelos Athlete Activity Badge requirements 1a, 1b, 1c, 2, and 3.  We touched on requirement 4 and we started requirements 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d, 5e, 6 & 7

Attached below is a copy of the form your scouts were given. The form is nothing more than a printed copy of page 132 of the Webelos handbook.  Those who did not make the meeting should print out a copy and have someone help them get started right away. You have 3 days to complete this if you wish to earn it in time for the Blue & Gold in March.

Next week, Monday February 11th, we will start working on the remaining Webelos Badge requirements to finish up the Webelos rank. After that we will probably go into knife safety and have the Bears and Webelos earn their Whittling Chip.

Activity Badge Progress Record

Welcome 2013

We hope that everyone had an incredible Holiday Season.  With the crazy amount of Christmas Cookies and New Years Snacks around, I am sure the little ones were running around with sugar induced energy while the rest of us feel like we are stuck in slow motion.  We start off the new year on January 7

We have quite a few things going on right away at the beginning of the year that we wanted to give everyone a heads up on…

Dues – Past Due

We have several that are outstanding on dues. The due date for the 2013 dues are a couple weeks past. The due date was set so that we would be able to make sure everyone was registered and on the pack charter at rechartering time. The new charter was due on December 31st.  If you have not yet paid dues, we were unable to unable to cover registration fees for the 2013 year.  Once we receive payment we will submit the appropriate fees to council and get your scout added to the charter.  Please note, that by not being on the charter, your scout is not covered by insurance and is not eligible to participate in BSA sponsored scout functions  for liability and legal reasons. We are also not able to supply physical awards to those who haven’t paid dues either. The scout will still earn and be credited for anything he earns, however the pack buys these awards as the BSA does not provide them.  Awards are one of the many things that dues help cover.

Cub Scout Klondike

The Cub Scout Klondike this year is going to be held on January 26th.  There is not a whole lot of time to get ready for this but we need an accurate head count as soon as possible and to collect the fee for the derby.  The fee is $12 per scout. It is an all day event which includes lunch, hot cocoa, a Klondike derby patch and lots of fun. The boys who have participated in this event look forward to it each year.  It is a fun time.  I’ll explain more about this annual event at the end of the meeting on Monday.

Fundraising

We are gearing up for our first fundraiser.  We will, again, be selling Krispy Kreme Donuts by the dozen in the form of certificates.  This fundraiser was a huge success last year.  The buyers get them cheaper than in store and the pack raises money at the same time.  We have some new twists this year to add some incentive.  More on this at the January Pack Meeting.

Whittling Chip

In February,  the Bear and Webelos will work on their Whittling Chip (Knife safety).  The boys look forward to this one each year. This will be a two part course with week 1 being about safety and then week two they will practice what they learned and get to try their hand at carving a bar of soap and earn their whittling chip.

Pinewood Derby

The Pinewood Derby will be coming up.  More on that later, but we will hold a workshop for those interested. If anyone has any basic wood working skills and would like to help assist with the workshop, please let us know.  We would love your help.

Trips, Outings and Camping

Spring will be here before you know it and we have some ideas in mind but let’s hear from you. Throw some suggestions our way for not just camping and overnighters but what about day trips that relate to what the boys need to work on?  Any ideas?

2012 Christmas Party & More

Christmas Party

Remember, next week is our annual Christmas Party.  We moved the time to begin at 6:30 instead of 7:00.  It will be a great time for all.  The leaders of Pack 155 will be providing the main dish and families volunteered to bring snacks, beverages & paper products.  We have a small gift for the boys and a surprise visitor coming as well so be sure to bring a camera.

No Meetings for the Remainder of December

Please remember we will not be meeting on December 24th (Christmas Eve) nor on December 31st (New Year’s Eve).  This is part of the reason it is important to have dues paid by Monday the 17th.  We will be rechartering the pack over the Christmas break so once again I can’t stress the importance of coming to us if you have any issues. We can not put anyone on the charter who hasn’t paid dues.

Dues

Dues for the 2013 year are $100 and will cover the full year from January 1st, 2013 through December 31st, 2013.  If you have any concerns, speak with us immediately as anyone who has not paid will not be registered with the pack for the new year. It is important that all boys have an up to date registration so that they can participate in organized scouting activities.  Proper registration is mandatory for insurance and liability purposes.  Please Note:  The $100.00 is strictly for the 2013 scouting year and covers the entire year, January 1st through December 31st.  For new scouts it does not cover the $20 that covered the remainder of the 2012 scouting year.  If you still owe this $20.00, it is due immediately and must be paid in full before any monies will be applied to the 2013 scouting year.

The New Year

The new year is going to start off busy. Right from the get go we will be getting ready for lots of fun such as the Klondike Derby, Pinewood Derby, Blue & Gold and then camping season and summer activities will commence.
