2017 Klondike Derby

KlondikePatchThe Klondike Derby is an event modeled after the Klondike Gold Rush.  Please note that this is *NOT* the Pinewood Derby, where you work with your son to build a wooden race care.  In the Klondike Derby the scouts will be broke down into sleds (teams). They will then pull the supply filled sled from town (station) to town (station) performing activities at each town (station). The activities are themed and offer fun and/or a challenge to scout skills/scouting knowledge.

The cost of the Klondike Derby was $8 per scout and $4 per adult if paid before 1/1/16. The cost is now $10 per scout and $5 per adult and it includes lunch (hot dogs and chips), hot cocoa, thermal mug, and loads of fun.  Final payment was due on Monday January 16th.

The Derby will begin around 9:00am “Rain or Shine“.  Please be there no later than 8:45am.  The event coordinators are seeking volunteers to assist.  Assisting will beat standing around in the cold all day with nothing to do.

Please remember to bring your neckerchief, handbook and a bottle of water with your son’s name on it.

Now for the important stuff — The weather is expected to be partly sunny with a low of 40 degrees and a high of 55 degrees.  It will be colder in the morning and gradually warm up as the day goes on.  At this time of the year things can change pretty quickly meaning it could be snowing, raining, warmer or colder.  BE PREPARED but more importantly make sure your boys are prepared.  In addition to dressing properly and bringing the required supplies, bring spare socks, and a heavy blanket just in case.

Dressing in layers (for cold weather)

When it is cold outside and you are going to be out in the elements for an extended period of time it is vital that you dress in layers.  Below is some basic layering advice to assist you

  • Layer 1 – Under garments, heavy socks.
  • Layer 2 – Long Johns
    • If they are the Under Armor type, do not wear a t-shirt underneath it.
    • If you don’t have long johns then a long sleeve shirt and sweatpants work.
  • Layer 3 – Pants & Shirt
    • Pants should be something that can shield the wind; jeans are not good for this; but acceptable if the only alternative
    • Running pants and hiking pants are great, a nylon mixture not cotton.
    • These should be something that do not hold water.
  • Layer 4 – Outer Shell, Coat, Hat, Gloves, Boots, Rain Jacket/Poncho
    • A coat, while not seen as cool anymore, is your best line of defense.
    • Hoodies, even if lined, will not repel wind and moisture.
    • Don’t forget a hat and gloves. Mittens will keep your hands warmer but gloves will provide free fingers. A good combination is cotton gloves inside water proof mittens.
    • Boots are a must *AND REQUIRED*

2017 Whittling Chip Update (Bears & Webelos Update)

Whittling Chip CardOn Monday, January 16th, the Bears and Webelos continued their knife safety training by covering some more detailed parts of a pocket knife, the different types of pocket knives, how to choose a good pocket knife, the rules, safety, and the care of a pocketknife.  We also reviewed what was covered last week.

The scouts were given a worksheet to complete as a homework assignment.  This worksheet (attached below), must be turned in along with a signed permission form (also attached) in order for your scout to complete his whittling chip.  Without these, your scout cannot participate in the final part of the training.

On Monday, January 23rd, we will complete the whittling chip course by having the scouts practice what they learned with apples, bars of soap, and if time permits we may allow some of them to use other pocket knifes to try whittling a piece of wood.

  • For Bears this course will complete the Bear Claws Adventure  and allow your Bear to earn his Whittling Chip Card.
  • For 1st year Webelos this isn’t a requirement for rank but the training is required to allow your Webelos to earn his Whittling Chip Card. The first year den leader may opt to skip the hands on portion of the training and work on other requirements.
  • For 2nd year Webelos this is one of the requirements for the Arrow of Light Scouting Adventure.
  • For returning Webelos who have already earned their Whittling Chip Card, this training is required by the pack in order to upkeep the privilege of the whittling chip.

Attached below are a parent letter describing the course, a copy of safety rules and care tips they can keep, and a parent permission slip. Your scout must sign the permissions slip to acknowledge the rules, and a parent or guardian must also sign the slip acknowledging the rules and giving the scout permission to participate and earn his whittling chip. This slip along *MUST* be turned no later than Monday January 23rd.  Without this, your scout cannot earn his whittling chip.

The Bear and Webelos Den leaders also asked that their scouts complete the cyberchip requirements by Monday January 30th.  We will make another post regarding those shortly.

Lion Cubs…

Hello Lion Cub Parents! Last night we covered a few things.

We completed Mountain Lion adventure requirements 1 and 2: Gather outdoor items you’d need on an outdoor adventure; and S.A.W. (Stay in place, Answer when called, and blow your Whistle) for if they were to ever become separated from group.

We also completed Animal Kingdom requirement 2, show you know what to do in an emergency.

HOMEWORK: Animal Kingdom Requirement 3 is their homework for the next 2 weeks. Save energy. We will talk about it, at our next den meeting, on Monday, January 30, 2017.

Hope you all have a great 2 weeks, see you on the 30th!

Happy Scouting!

Happy Cub Scout

Lion Cub Parents

Attention all Lion Cub Parents: The Lion Cubs ARE meeting tomorrow, Monday January 16, 2017.  Last week, we worked on the mountain lion achievement, requirements 1 and 2. For requirement 1, we gathered outdoor items we need for an outdoor adventure (such as hiking). We went over the 6 essentials we ALWAYS have on us which are; first aid kit, filled water bottle, trail food, sun protection, flashlight and a whistle. For requirement 2, we talked about S.A.W. Stay in place if lost, Answer if you hear your name, Whistle; BLOW IT! We were missing a few cubs last week, so I plan on going over these again. 🙂 Tomorrow we will also work on Animal Kingdom requirement 2: Show you know what to do in an emergency. Requirement 3 will be HOMEWORK for boys, I’ll post details about that after tomorrow night’s meeting. Have a great night, hope to see you all tomorrow at 7pm.

2017 Whittling Chip (Bears & Webelos Update)

Whittling Chip CardOn Monday, January 9th, the Bears and Webelos began their annual Knife Safety training. This class is designed to teach knife safety and additional rules that must be followed.  While this course is required for Bears and 2nd year Webelos Scouts who have not already earned it, the pack requires any scout who has previously earned their whittling chip to take the training annually.

Bears should immediately start reading the Bear Claws adventure which can be found on page 30 of their handbooks.

We started by covering the following: what the whittling chip is; the whittling chip pledge and what it means as well as how it pertains to safety; the basic parts of the knife; how to pass a knife to another; the safety/blood circle; the difference between a tool and a weapon; how the pocket knife is a weapon at schools; the no school rule; and an introduction to various bladed items with their differences and validity of their use.

On Monday, January 16th, we will continue our knife safety course by covering some more detailed parts of a pocket knife, the different types of pocket knives, how to choose a good pocket knife, the rules, safety, and the care of a pocketknife.  This will reinforce what we covered last week and expand upon it.

  • We may or may not have activities that allow the use of a pocketknife and having a whittling chip card is a requirement to participate in such activities.

Tiger Update – January 9th 2017

Tiger Elective Adventure: Family Stories

The Tigers worked on the Family Stories Adventure (page 134 in the Tiger Handbook) which was designed to help Tigers learn about their families and their heritage. It is through this adventure that Tigers begin to learn that a scout is courteous as they learn family differences and explore different cultures.

During the den meeting the Tigers made a family tree (req 5), made a family crest (req 2), talked about their names (req 6), and talked about different families (req 1).

During the week the Tigers should be working with their families to learn why they were given their name and where their families originated from.

Christmas Party Tonight

scout christmasJust a reminder that tonight is our annual Christmas Party which will begin at 6:30 PM.  We will have a surprise visitor tonight for the scouts and are looking forward to a good time.

Thank you to those who have signed up to bring a dish, snacks, drinks or other items. We are still looking for more juice products and additional snacks or dishes are always welcome.

We ask that everyone not assisting with setup arrive after 6:30.  Those who are assisting should try to arrive around 5:00.  We will have an hour and a half to get everything set up so the more help the merrier.

We look forward to seeing everyone tonight!

P.S.  While Scout Uniforms are not required, there is a photo opportunity with a special guest that you may wish for your scout to be in uniform for.  You are welcome to make this a family photo as well 🙂

Five Below Fundraiser

Together, with Five Below, we are going to try to raise money by doing something most people already do, shop!

The Five Below at 4640 E Roosevelt Blvd. (located next to the Old Navy in the Walmart and Home Depot shopping Plaza) will be hosting a fundraiser for the next week, from Dec 12th through Dec 17th.  10% of all purchases made, with the flyer, will be donated to Pack 1776.

I have attached a copy of the half page flyer (2 per page). Please print a copy of the flyer and share with as many people as possible. As long as they present the flyer to the cashier, at the time of purchase we will receive credit.  Again it is important to take the flyer as without it we will not receive credit.

Please share the flyer with anyone you know that shops at or may need something from Five Below.

Share, Shop, Donate!!

Pack Meeting Tomorrow Night

Happy Cub ScoutTomorrow night we will be having a pack meeting and we ask all boys to be in as much of their official uniform as they have.  Scouts should be full of energy and cub scout spirit.

We ask at least one parent/guardian to attend with their scout to support their accomplishments, encourage them further, and for any announcements.

Please note that the pack meetings typically last 1.5 hours.  To help keep it short please be on time – we will be beginning with the Bobcat Ceremony for new scouts.

We would like to use the 2nd year Webelos Scouts, and a couple of the 1st year Webelos scouts in the Bobcat ceremony; if parents of returning 1st & 2nd year Webelos could plan on being at the gym by 6:30 it would help make sure they have time to understand what they need to do.

Thank you and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Wolf Update 12/5/2016

On Dec 5, 2016 the wolves completed the Running with the Pack Adventure which aims to promote physical fitness and good health through games and other fun activities.

To close off the adventure we completed the adventure with the following requirements:

  • Requirement 1: Play catch: due to space limitations, we covered this by playing a game of hot potato.
  • Requirement 4: Playing a sport or game and showing ‘good sportsmanship’. We played a few games including amusing attempts at tug of war!
  • Requirement 6: Demonstrate a balanced diet by helping plan a healthy meal, using Thanksgiving dinner as a model, and making a list of foods used to prepare the meal.

Homework: Don’t forget to practice flexibility and balance by practicing front rolls, back rolls, and trying frog stands at home.

Please note that next week is our Pack Meeting. The wolves will be performing a skit, which is the final requirement for the Howling at the Moon adventure. The updated requirement 4 is to perform their role for a den meeting or pack program. Please do everything possible to ensure their participation.

Have a great week.
