Wolves, Bears and Arrow of Light (Web 2s)

Please bring your rank books in on 3/31. Your leaders will be collecting the books to review, update and return.

Parents — if you have a few moments to review the books and update with any family activities it would be much appreciated.

Scout Sunday Service

Saints United Lutheran Church will be hosting a Scout Service tomorrow at 10 am – 11am. All are welcome to come.

The Boy Scout Troop will be having a bake sale from 9am – 9:45am before services. Also if you wish to bring a non- perishable item/items with you for donation to the St. John’s pantry there will be a collection on premises.

Hope to see you there.

Community Service

Wednesday 3/26 the Lutheran Church will be having a Lent program and have asked if we would like to help with setting up, serving, and clean up. All are welcome to come and help. This is a great way for us to give back both to our community and the organization that sponsors our scouts.

The program will run from 5:45pm – 7:00pm. There will also be a service from 7pm – 8pm for those they want to join. Use the usual gym entrance.

We ask that volunteers be there before 6pm to be assigned.  Uniforms would be appreciated but not required. Both Asst. Cubmaster Karen Wonsor and Scout parent/helper Rebecca Lauf will be there for checking in. Please report to them upon arrival.

This Weekend: First Aid, CPR, AED Training & Readyman Activity Badge

NOTE:  THIS IS A BROWN BAG LUNCH EVENT.  BRING A LUNCH

This weekend is an opportunity for all parents, leaders, webelos scouts & boy scouts to attain their American Red Cross First Aid, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automated external defibrillator) training and certification.   These are the official certifications and meet the needs of workplace responders, professional rescuers, school staff, professional responders and healthcare providers, as well as the general public.

  • First Aid: Learn how to respond to common first aid emergencies, including burns; cuts; head, neck and back injuries and more. Pediatric option available.
  • CPR/AED: Learn how to respond to cardiac and breathing emergencies in adults, including the use of automated external defibrillators (AED).

Certifications, regardless of which you test for, will cost $20 to process with the American Red Cross.  This is a one time fee and covers one or both certifications; certifications will last 2 years.  The Scouts need to be physically capable of performing chest compressions in order to certify for CPR.  Any Webelos scout unable to perform the compressions is still eligible for his First Aid certification but will be unable to obtain his CPR certification.

All Parents, regardless of your scout’s level, are welcome to take this course and get certified as you can never have enough first aid/cpr/aed trained people at a scouting event.  If your job requires this training, certification is normally around $75 every 2 years. Even if you have a year left on your current certification for $20 you get an extra year.

All leaders within the pack are strongly encouraged to take the course and get certified.

The event will be from 8:00 Am until approximately 2:00-2:30 PM.  Lunch WILL NOT be provided, please bring a lunch.  More details can be found on the event page at http://cubpack155.org/x/6G

Rank Requirements

It is recommended that scouts, regardless of rank, read up on their appropriate requirements and ask questions during training. All requirements can be found in your Webelos Handbook, Boy Scout Handbook, and Venturing Handbook/Ranger Guide.

Bears & Webelos Progress Report: Knife Safety Training

Whittling Chip CardTonight the Bears and Webelos begin their annual Knife Safety training. This class is designed to teach knife safety and in addition to some basic safety rules, the boys will learn additional rules that must be followed.  While this is a requirement for Bears, the pack requires Webelos scouts to take the training each year as well.

Our program takes 2-3 hours depending on the attentiveness and behavior of the boys. We start with an introduction to various bladed items, teach them the differences, and validity of their usage. We will cover a series of safety requirements, administer a short test, and if they pass we will practice carving apples and soap.

  • For Bears this course will complete Bear Achievement 19: Shavings and Chips and allow your Bear to earn his Whittling Chip Card.
  • For new Webelos this isn’t a requirement for rank but the training is required to allow your Webelos to earn his Whittling Chip Card.
  • For returning Webelos who have already earned their Whittling Chip Card, this training is required by the pack in order to upkeep the privilege of the whittling chip.

We may or may not have activities that allow the use of a pocketknife and having a whittling chip card is a requirement to participate in such activities.

Tonight Cancelled – Updated Bowling & First Aid Info

Tonight

Due to the weather we will not be meeting tonight.  The conditions aren’t the safest therefore enjoy the evening off of scouts.

Bowling

Tonight was intended to be the deadline for signups and payment for bowling next week.  The weather put a damper in this plan.

If you are not already signed up, we will need to hear from you by email with a headcount. So please send an email to signups , with an exact number of how many will be attending, by 6:oo pm EST 2/4/2014.  We will be unable to add people after this date as we need to submit a head count for lane reservations.

For those who have not yet paid, please plan on paying us at the bowling alley. We need to pay all in one lump sum, so we must have your payment then and there. The cost is $11 per person.

Alternatively, if anyone is signed up and has changed their mind please let us know so that we can remove you from the list.

First Aid and CPR/AED Training

We will extend sign ups and payment for this training until Monday February 17th.  The course is free to all Webelos scouts as it will help them meet most of the requirements for the Readyman Activity Badge.  In order to certify in First Aid and CPR/AED there is a $20 processing fee.

The Boy Scouts and Leaders of Troop 155 are also welcome to take the course and earn certification.

Dressing Warm for the 2014 Klondike Derby

Before we get to the layers, some  final words about tomorrow’s derby.  The Derby will begin around 9:00am “Rain or Shine“.  Please be there no later than 8:45am.  The event coordinators are seeking volunteers to assist.  Assisting will beat standing around in the cold all day with nothing to do.

Please remember to bring your neckerchief, handbook and a bottle of water with your son’s name on it.

Now for the important stuff — IT WILL BE COLD, VERY VERY COLD.  The high will be 32 degrees at 2:00pm; it will only be around 20 degrees when we start.  There will be some snow in the morning and around noon, not to mention what is still on the ground.

BE PREPARED and make sure your boys are prepared.  Bring spare socks, and a heavy blanket just in case.

Dressing in layers

When it is cold outside and you are going to be out in the elements for an extended period of time it is vital that you dress in layers.  Below is some basic layering advice to assist you

  • Layer 1 – Under garments, heavy socks.
  • Layer 2 – Long Johns
    • If they are the Under Armor type, do not wear a t-shirt underneath it.
    • If you don’t have long johns then a long sleeve shirt and sweatpants work.
  • Layer 3 – Pants & Shirt
    • Pants should be something that can shield the wind; jeans are not good for this but acceptable if the only alternative
    • Running pants and hiking pants are great, a nylon mixture not cotton.
    • These should be something that do not hold water.
  • Layer 4 – Outer Shell, Coat, Hat, Gloves, Boots, Rain Jacket/Poncho
    • A coat, while not seen as cool anymore, is your best line of defense.
    • Hoodies, even if lined, will not repel wind and moisture.
    • Don’t forget a hat and gloves. Mittens will keep your hands warmer but gloves will provide free fingers. A good combination is cotton gloves inside water proof mittens.
    • Boots are a must *AND REQUIRED*
